Art4noise

Art4noise is an well-established post-production facility based in the heart of SOHO, London. Their long list of credits includes classic feature films such as Alien and Blade Runner alongside numerous popular TV series and documentaries. Steinberg talked to Peter Baldock, owner of Art4noise and one of the company's directors.

For years Art4noise is among the leading post-production facilities in London. What the of success factors in your business?
It is hard to say what is behind our success. Mostly I believe it is down to the fact that being a smaller post-production facility, we have been able to offer a very personal approach to creating sound tracks for film and TV shows while still keeping the workflow professional. We have grown up with Nuendo —
so having Nuendo as our main DAW has given us an edge over non-host based systems.

In 2010 you built a completely new studio. Can you tell us something about the rooms and the equipment? Why did you move to the new location?
In our new Studio we have a Euphonix System 5 Fusion as our main mixing console, running with Nuendo 5. Our WK Audio ID Controller is now in a dedicated 5.1 sound design suite also running Nuendo 5 in parallel with our Capybara and other sound design tools. Our ADR studio and all our edit suites have been upgraded to Nuendo 5 as well. And all our rooms are acoustically isolated and air-conditioned. Sadly we had to move as our old premises are being demolished for the London cross rail development.

What were the most challenging tasks during the Moonshot post-production? How did you use Nuendo in this project?
At the time of Moonshot our studio was running with two Nuendo systems, a mix engine and a record machine. The editors worked on separate projects, and these were merged into a master project, which was enlarged as the work progressed. We were able to push the limits of the Nuendo project as we were using this double system. To give you an idea, the dialog tracklay had 400 tracks before premix to contain all the ADR and the edit updates.
And the final master project had at least 150+ tracks with 16 groups and ten FX channels. The record machine handled the stems required for the different versions.

What features of Nuendo 5 do you find especially useful and why?
The updates to the MediaBay are particularly useful and the clip package is brilliant as well —
and speeds up some of the areas of tracklay where we are using similar recurring effects. Multiple marker tracks and the ability to import and export CSV files are already improving our workflow.
