Press Reviews for CC121
Digital Music Italy 02/09
CC121 highly accellerate workflows in Virtual Studio based on Steinberg’s sequencer. It’s solid, well built, with high level of quality and a simply and immediate functional architecture. The tactile feeling while using buttons and knobs is nice and accurate. Also the motorized fader does its great job and allows you to find exact settings and automation … CC121 is designed for professionals, but winks one’s eye at neophytes and beginners, who - with a single expense - can get a soft-sequencer (Cubase AI 4 is included in the package) and a top quality controller.

CC121 works beautifully straight out of the box. The motorized fader and large EQ section bring a wonderfully tactile new dimension to working in Cubase, and after using the magical AI Knob for a while you’ll wonder how you used to manage without it. [MR816 CSX and CC121 are both] high quality kit that’s beautifully integrated with Cubase. The MR units will suit studios in particular, while the CC121 controller should be a welcome addition for just about every Cubase user.

With the CC121, Steinberg puts a small but important part of Cubase into hardware form and offers a controller that has been designed as an additional help in using [the software] and gives the user a powerful control surface next to keyboard and mouse. The build quality of the unit is excellent, [it] offers a sensible button layout and definitely makes working easier where it used to be normal to work with a mouse. The usage concept behind the EQ is unique and deserves much praise.

The whole unit makes a very solid impression. The casing is completely made from metal, the rotary encoders are pleasant to touch, the buttons have a distinct point of pressure and the fader is light and can be used with confidence. CC121 offers a huge advantage because of the focus on one particular software. During my tests, I was able very quickly to navigate around the unit blind and this really increased the speed at which I work. The enormous advantage of this solution is not to replace mouse control but to supplement it in a useful way. In total, one can say that the Advanced Integration is very successful.

Fader, encoders and buttons offer the well-known Yamaha quality … In practice, working with CC121 is simple and intuitive … The decision to do without a display and doubled functionality and at the same time tailor the unit to Cubase has proved to be a good one. Because thanks to the flat learning curve, CC121 is an extremely effective tool that the user of the DAW in the studio won’t want to part with after only a short time.

"CC121 integrates with your Cubase with grace and is a breeze to install … [CC121 is] a controller which really feels like a physical extension of Cubase … Finally we're able to handle Cubase with a dedicated and suitable controller ... it's a big step in the right direction."

[With Cubase, MR816 CSX and CC121] It’s obvious that this mirrored system from Steinberg/Yamaha has huge appeal as a compact solution … There's no denying that Steinberg, with the assimilation of hardware into their stylish DAW, from now on offer one of the rare solutions offered by the same manufacturer with 8 tracks, that is affordable and highly seductive.
