Press Reviews for MR816 CSX
Computer Music Espana January 2009
The MR816 CSX worked without any problems, we pretty much cannot think of another native system with such a level of integration. The audience not using Cubase will look at this with jealousy, asking themselves why this level of integration is not available with their systems.

With all the I/O's available on the interface makes this an extremely flexible option ... High quality mic preamps and some nice digital converters impress, but it's the total integration with Cubase that makes this product unique ... If this is a first taste of what comes to expect from the cooperation between Steinberg and Yamaha, then Cubase users can anticipate a very nice future.

The MR816 series offers truly excellent audio quality for the price, and anyone who does a lot of recording will find its DSP and zero-latency monitoring facilities invaluable … Anyone who buys this as their first audio interface with Cubase or Nuendo will assume that such amazing integration is normal. However the vast majority of us, who have previously had to scurry between sequencer and thirdy-party mixing utilities, will see the MR series for what it is: a major step forward in making the recording and mixing process as easy as possible.

[MR816 CSX and CC121 are both] high quality kit that’s beautifully integrated with Cubase. The MR units will suit studios in particular … The True Integrated Monitoring and Quick Connect technology certainly represent a huge bonus to anyone frequently involved in recording … MR816 CSX [has] Great sound, seamless Cubase integration and welcome DSP power.

From a purely Cubase perspective, we found that the MR816 CSX worked superbly well- we can’t think of any other native system that achieves this level of integration … In use, [the Sweet Spot Morphing Channel Strip] sounds excellent … Serious Cubase users should take an equally serious look at the MR816 line, as they have significant advantages over generic audio interfaces.

In our listening test, the MR816 CSX showed itself to be more than cooperative and offers a distinctive sound. All signals have very good resolution in the higher ranges and impress with their silkiness … In terms of ease-of-use the MR816 CSX is way ahead of the competition and demonstrates successfully how the control of hardware can be seamlessly integrated into a sequencer.

Seen from a technical standpoint the MR816 CSX delivers excellent measured characteristics … the microphone preamps deserve a special mention, because in this price class they offer a really exceptionally high level of detail … With the MR interfaces this manufacturer has really pushed the integration to its limits and delivers an all-round and harmonious product … The DSP channel strip is an absolute hit, because it makes it particularly easy for newcomers to get results with a musical quality and fully justifies the additional price [over MR816 X].

The new MR816 audio interfaces convinced first of all as well-equipped audio interfaces with high sound quality throughout, quick drivers and a competitive price. Thanks to the well-implemented ability to cascade the units and the integrated ADAT interface, even professional tasks with a larger scope can be carried out well. The required monitor mix has been solved very well by Steinberg with the onboard DSP. The integration of the included plug-ins in Steinberg’s own sequencer products is exemplary … Here, a path towards the bringing together of hardware and software is being trodden with the well thought out matching [of components] – and this is the only path that will make working in the virtual recording studio easier in the long term.

In my opinion, the integration of hardware control in the DAW software has been implemented very successfully. Above all the ability to do monitoring tasks within the software but working without latency with the hardware makes simplifies using it immensely. … The sound quality of the microphone preamps is extraordinarily good and the converters also offer a lot of sound for the money.

[With Cubase, MR816 CSX and CC121] It’s obvious that this mirrored system from Steinberg/Yamaha has huge appeal as a compact solution … There's no denying that Steinberg, with the assimilation of hardware into their stylish DAW, from now on offer one of the rare solutions offered by the same manufacturer with 8 tracks, that is affordable and highly seductive.

My compliments to Steinberg and Yamaha, because [Quick Connect] is a combination of hardware and software that’s fun and really makes life easier … the microphone preamps and converters are pleasingly inconspicuous. For my ears, this Steinberg product is at the forefront of this market segment … Good drivers, good concept, nicely expandable – I like the Steinberg MR816 CSX very much.
