Switching to Cubase advise needed

Switching to Cubase advise needed

Postby glebreck » Thu Jan 03, 2013 8:07 pm

Hey all!
I am a Pro Tools user and am wanting to switch over to Cubase. I have used it a couple times and like the work flow. I am a home studio user. Everything I do is my own music, never really have a need for more than 20 tracks, and use a combination of virtual and live insturments. So I have a couple questions...

1. Would I be able to use my existing Mbox Pro interface with Cubase.
2. I am comming from Pro tools 9 so would Cubase 7 be the smarter move or would Cubase 6 elements handle the home hobby studio just fine.
3. Assuming the Mbox Pro works for the interface would I only need the cubase software and the eLicenser dongle to get rolling?
4. And my computer is a Mac with the latest OS. 10.8.2, 16 gig of ram so would this be workable?

I appreciate any help! Thanks much.

Dear glebreck,

why don't you just download the trial version of Cubase Elements 6 from your MySteinberg user account and give it a try? That way you can see if it's enough for your needs and if your equipment works as it should. If it does, then you can just buy the license. And if you ever feel like needing more, you can upgrade to a bigger version, like Cubase Artist for example.

1. probably, if you have 64-bit asio drivers you should be grand. (assuming you'll be running 64-bit Cubase).
2. Check the feature comparisons of the different versions, it's hard to tell without knowing what exactly you do. I use Artist 6.5 in my home studio and it does nearly everything I need. (there's always those few things that keep you wanting to upgrade, they know how to get my money :().
3. yes.
4. definitely.
Software: Steinberg Cubase Artist 6.5.2 64-bit.
Hardware: HP elitebook 8530b with W7 Home 64-bit
Terratec Producer PHASE X24fw - Steinberg Midex 8 - Steinberg CC121.
Analog: Mackie 802VLZ3 - Alesis M1 - Behringer Powerplay Pro-XL - Studio Projects C3
Instruments: Yamaha DTX750k - Yamaha MO-6 - Waldorf Blofeld.
3rd party plugins: Native Instruments Prism - BFD ECO - Arturia MinimoogV - Rob Papen Distort - Rob Papen Delay - Blue Cat Audio Free pack - Stillwell Major Tom - JSAudio CompShaper - Some more free stuff that gets little use.

My humble contributions to what could be considered music.
