VST Song import into Cubase 4/5

VST Song import into Cubase 4/5

Postby JPMD » Mon Dec 31, 2012 10:55 pm

OK guys ... bear with me ... I'm almost crying with excitement here .....
I have (and don't laugh too hard!) used Cubase VST 5.1 for ..er... a lot of years to produce music for theatre shows .... and I have a library of at least a few hundred songs and SFX that I have made .....
Well I decided that it was time to bite the bullet and get some new software .... but my problem was that obviously I couldn't import a VST 5.1 song into a current version of Cubase.... meaning that I had years of work that I maybe couldn't use again .... you can guess what that feels like.....?
I was looking through the Cubase 4/5 forum and nearly died when I saw the 'VST Song import into Cubase 4/5: a solution' post in the Announcements box.
Now I'm well out of date with how all this license stuff works but the post talks about being able to download a version of Cubase 3 to convert the Cubase VST format songs to a format that could be used in (as I understand it) later version of Cubase. I have the blue USB dongle for my copy of Cubase VST .... can I use that?....... and is it legal?......!!
Now I'm thinking of buying Cubase Artist 7 to replace Cubase VST to run on a Windows 7 32 bit PC......
So what I'd really appreciate help with is .... has any of you guys downloaded a Cubase 3 version from the link in the post and did it work ?... and what is the situation regarding needing a license for the Cubase 3 version .... and if I was to download Cubase 3, would it convert Cubase VST files into a format that could be used in Cubase 7 Artist.....?
I'm sure you can appreciate how much I want to be able to use the songs I've created in Cubase VST again ... years of work that I can't use again (that makes me want to cry....) so any help or advice on this would be really really appreciated ...........!!!!!!!!!!
Happy New Year everyone!!!!! .....
One day we shall look back on this and laugh! .... but until then.....

You need a USB Dongle with a license from the same product line as the download.
So if you wnat to use the SX3 download, you need a Cubase SX3/4/5/6/7 full version license on a USB dongle to run it.
If you intend to buy Cubase Artist 7, you might be able to use the Cubase SL 3 download (Don“t know, since Artist version is a new product line, that is lower than the older SL / Studio versions.
Apart from that, you need to check, if SX/SL 3 will still run on the OS you intend to install them
Cubase 5.1.1 (32bit) | Win 7 Pro x64 SP1 | RME Fireface UFX | RME Fireface 800 | Cubase Essential 5 | Win 7 Home Premium x64

I just took off my thinkingcap, it got filled up with too much crap...

Cheers thinkingcap!!
That would be an email to Steinberg support regarding the license I suppose?......
From what I can read, SX3 or SL3 will run on a 32 bit Windows 7 PC and it can also run in an XP compatability mode so one way or the other it should work. I only need SX3 to import old VST songs into then re-save in the newer version ........ I'm just desperate to still be able to re-use what I've already created!
I'm so out of date with all this .. I wish I'd updated my software a few years ago and kept up a bit......!
Thanks for your time.... really appreciate it....!

You need not contact SB for the license. What you need to do is upgrade to the version of Cubase that you want. (Cubase Artist 7)
That licensing will enable you to run the pertinent Cubase 3 that you need to convert to the .cpr format that will run in Artist 7. My guess is that it will be the SE3 version that you will need.

Thanks Suprawill1!.. I'm ordering Artist 7 in a couple of days so I'll try SE3 then .......I don't mind whether its SE3 or SX3 as long as it converts the songs from VST5.1!!

It will. I've done quite a few times with SL3. :)
