Re: Leap Motion

I did a quick video of Geco running the sphere in halion. Sorry for the crappy audio, I used a web cam mic to pick up the sound in the room.

Re: Sound On Sound says it all: Too Dark

I'm not 100% sure the theme is too dark. I don't like it, but I won't blame the darkness. It's all about contrast and positioning and structure so that you can find what you are looking for. I find the new mixer to be a morass of blobs of indistinct washes of color. I can't tell which channel goes with which fader. I can't tell which row goes with which column. I really just can't find anything without actively trying to look for it. Even with the faders grouped, I can't easily delineate one channels setting from the next. I have no such problem in C6.5 or prior. I find trying to use the mixer extremely fatiguing and cumbersome. That doesn't even take into account the clickfest, lack of positional/zoom memory, losing plugins behind the mixer, can't use hotkeys unless you click on the mixer, rack configs not working, workspaces not working, linking only partially working for solo/mute/record ... etc ... etc ... etc ... and that's after a year of patches ... wooohooo

Re: Tips Tricks And Workflow Goodness.

Record VSTi instrument tracks without using groups or bounce or export ...

F4 -> Output tab -> hit + sign and create a Stereo Output called whatever "VSTi Out". Do not assign this output to any of your audio card outputs.

On your Instrument track, set the output to the "VSTi Output" from the previous step.

Create a Stereo Audio Track in the project, set the INPUT to "VSTi Output"

Enable monitor and/or Record enable.

KeyCommand Utility - Now Testing Mac Support

UPDATE: 11/13/2013: New version with an updated css that uses smaller fonts. Added a "." to the empty cells.

There is now a bit of script that lets you more easily choose MAC or PC

#change these two values to identify MAC or PC
my @mods = @PCmods; #set to @MACmods or @PCmods case senstive
my @abrs = @PCabr; #set to @MACabr or @PCabr case senstive

Find this section and set the value after the = sign.

Typical disclaimer - this program isn't designed to do anything useful. If you accidently get it to do something you find agreeable, then that's a bonus. Should running it on your computer ruin your parents credit rating or modify the future beyond your ability to live in it (FZ reference FTW), that's on you.

perl script linked at the bottom of this post
Put the two files from the zip at the bottom of this post, in the directory that has your Key Commands.xml file in it.

Run the script
It will create a KeyCommands.html file
Open KeyCommands.html in your browser of choice.
Bask in the glory of my L33T Perl skillz...

There is a css file with a "background-color: xxxx" value for each command class of command. You can use internet colors or hex color values. Google css background-color for explanation of choices.

NOTE: There are some odd keyboard choices like '-' and '+' that are not treated normally. For example + should really be 'SHIFT+='. But because the + is treated as it's own symbol, there is a + row that can only ever have 1 command mapped to it. And you can never have a 'SHIFT+='. Hope that makes sense.

NOTE 2: If you hover your mouse over a command, it will show you the complete name as it is in the Cubase key command list like below;

Oops, and duh! I need to actually pay attention to things too. ;)
 it's all good.

@Atlantis, there's a thousand little niggly things like that in Cubase. The more you use them, the more the routing will make sense. So, just keep pluggin away.

Re: Each lane to have their own insert

Here's some more tips to simplify .. instead of the dissolve

Just make a single MIDI track and assign a drum map (GM will work fine). Now for each articulation, you can send it to it's own MIDI out. So you can keep all of the drum notes in the same editor window and still drive the multiple audio tracks.

to maybe make that a little clearer, each note in the MIDI Editor window can be assigned to it's own MIDI out.

Re: So is this a bug..

on the two tracks, look at the events and see if at the top right hand corner you have a symbol that looks like 3 balls with 2 lines connecting them.

Linking is a button on the mixconsole. It's easy to link accidentally and then make changes that you don't realize are cascading. Look at page 201 in the manual.

Those are just a couple things that could cause that problem.

EDIT: If you are using the 32 bit C7, you have to edit the line that starts with dir = WshShell and remove _64.

It still seems to work with C7. So just create a RandomName.vbs file in your \\Users\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Cubase7(_64)\ directory.

Copy the following code into the vbs file. You can edit it with any text editor. You can mess with the colors for the type of command and there are options for dealing with some non-US character sets. Once you copy the code into the file, save it ... double click the file and an html file should pop up with your key commands laid out by accelerator.

I've just test the vbs, the html generated fine.. I am testing it with Cubase 6, but this should not be an issue.

However the modifiers are wrong - e.g one of my shortcut works with the Alt modifier, but this is tabulated to the Shift column...all other keycommands are also assigned to a wrong modifier.

Any idea?

Never mind, I think I figured it out. He didn't make it so that it sorted by modifier and I moved them to my preferred order. I wrote a similar utility in C#, but it lets you set the modifier order. I had assumed this would as well.

Anyhow, I put it back in his fixed order. So, the command will stay in the same place, but the column header will be different.

You can just fix this one line if you want. It should be as follows...
A(0) = Array("key", "-", "Shift", "Ctrl", "Alt", "Ctrl+Shift", "Alt+Shift", "Ctrl+Alt", "Ctrl+Alt+Shift")

Re: Oldie but Goodie Utility

This is excellent. Much easier to get a handle on the key commands
I built a spreadsheet and wrote a parser to import it into excel back in the SX days. The first time I saw the results laid out this way, it was such a huge eye opener. I was able to optimize so many aspects of the keymap that I didn't even know were screwed up. It also lets you see the huge gap of unused keys. It's just such a great way to see what's going on.

Re: Oldie but Goodie Utility

JMCecil,

I'm on Mac, and want to have this too. I run a Virtual Box install of windows xp and have succeeded in creating an html file from my key commands xml file by editing a few lines in the .vbs file.

The problem is that there is one more modifier key available on Mac than on PC, so I need to create more columns, which I was able to do, and parse the corresponding commands into them, which I was not.

I fiddled with the array statements, but don't have enough Basic knowledge to make this happen. I was hoping I am missing something that would help me.

Anywho, PM me if this is too much for a forum post, and thanks for your work on the original.
yeah, its tough because the variable and array setup he has is more the "geterdone" variety. Very hard to follow. I tried re-ordering the columns and failed miserably. But, I think the code you are looking for is in the case statements where he sets "kn" values for parsing in the loops.

+1 MUST FIX THE FOCUS ISSUE
+1 Shift Lock ... come on, we've asked for this from the very first day
+1 Fix/update AI functionality. As has already been established, I can't think of a use for the AI

In addition to yours

QC ... quick control banks
QC --- plugin memory .. if plugin x is focused .. these are the QC
QC --- Need to be able to select EQ Type from QC
PD --- Allow for Function mode on every preset (toggle all presets between note and Function mode)
PD --- Action mode for pads ... tie to hotkeys on VSTi for reverse, slow, stutter etc...
CH --- improved interpretation and management of read/write mode (currently doesn't synch properly with global settings)
CH --- Need to be able to rotate through, open/close plugins on the channel (then of course, have the saved QC set for that plugin available on the QC)
FD -- QC mode

Re: [Features] Important new feature suggestions on CMC-Series!

Maybe a more detailed explanation of each thing is in order

Quick Control Banks: is the ability to page through multiple Quick Control sets per track. HS2 has this (sort of) for the zones. But, 8 is just not even close to enough just for stand alone tracks, let alone when you add plugins to the track. There are enough buttons + shift options available already to do this.

Plugin Memory: This is simply the ability to have a QC bank per plugin that automatically gets enabled when the plugin has focus. This would be similar to Automap functionality (although limited to the goofy 8 restriction, that paging would resolve) and make the QC a truly useful device.

EQ Type Select: In EQ mode, it is boggling to me that you can't select the type. Now, we also need a way to get at the HP/LP section.

Function Mode: For those that don't have a PD... Preset 16 lets each pad be a Function Key to execute any key Cubase command. I currently have that preset configured to be a really fast Quantize pallet. But, we can already rotate between PAD and Velocity mode. I propose a FUNCTION mode where each preset can be either Velocity, Note, Action or Function. (I'll get to actions in a sec). The important thing is I could quickly go between a Quantize pallet and say a Warp Pallet, or a Transpose Pallet .. etc.

Action Mode for PD: So many drum machines have controls to stutter, reverse, scramble, slow, bit crush the sample being played. It would be cool to set aside some of the notes as mapable/learnable to VSTi controls.

Rotate through Plugins: Come on, this is seriously lacking in Cubase. We need to be able to easily access the plugins on a track. The CH could easily alt mode the previous/next track to scroll through the insert list. Then one of the F buttons could open/close the selected plugin. Obviously if you make the QC tweak above to allow plugin sensitive QCs, this becomes super powerful.

Re: [Poll] Fix the insert handling in the new mixer console?

There's also a lot of gray area here. This isn't an all or nothing problem. The hidden button thing bugs me, but would be easy to fix. Having to fly over for status is not useful to those of us who try not to use a mouse. However, that doesn't mean the current insert configuration can't be adjusted/fixed to accommodate control surface/keyboard users.

Re: How to move your HALion content.

In windows you can make symlinks that will solve the update problem. Just move the directory with the content where you want it to live, then create a symlink where it was originally installed pointing at the new location. Your programs will see the symlink directory as if it was the regular directory and updates will flow through to wherever you moved them.

Re: Oldie but Goodie Utility

With Steve's help we made progress on the Mac version. Still have a path issue to solve, but the basics seem to work. As soon as I get the path thing figured out, I'll post for general consumption/testing.

I have a 2nd version in progress that splits the column headers so they don't scroll. However, they don't retain their size in relation to the each other. So, have to figure that out. I want to get the regular version working before i tackle that.

Re: Using Mod Wheel to specify velocity.

Set the velocity to a fixed input value, something around the middle like 64, then use the Vel. Shift assigned to a QC. Use the GR to learn your mod wheel to control the QC with Vel. Shift assigned. With this setup forward on the wheel will increase velocity, down will lower velocity.

I played with this this morning, but javascript doesn't easily support the access to local files. I found a way to do it with ActiveX and other custom solutions, but none of them are cross platform, cross browser compatible. I think perl or python might be easier to make cross platform.

1.Cubase 7.5 with a supporting app for the iphone (to control the software from your iphone).
2.Groove agent 4 with a supporting app for the iphone (to control the software from your iphone).
3.New hardware with a supporting app for the iphone.
None of these change anything as there are gazzillions of apps for controlling DAWs from smartphones/tablets already on the market. The slogan would be "We finally caught up to 2010 on Nov 14th"

Re: [Poll] Fix the insert handling in the new mixer console?

- but make the hover area bigger, and better to find, e.g. more to the inside of the insert slot
- also make the buttons bigger. once hovering they can occupy a lot of space, does not matter, you can read the insert name as long as you don't hover
I don't want to hover ... ever. I want to look and see.

The insert slot size is bigger than before and still displays less information.

Sorry, I don't like these ideas.

Apple were great innovators in the web development space and brought us HTML5 which has revolutionized the world with native MPEG, MP4 etc.
ROFL, you might want to take a gander at where html5 came from .. the only reason apple adopted early (notice the word adopted, not created) it was to get out from under the stranglehold flash had on the content serving world.

EDIT: and were NOT among the first to put it in their browser as standard support ... see opera and others for that distinction.

Re: Moving MIDI Notes

You can also use relative snap by the way.

And it seems like the requested feature changed topics like 3 times.

In the ME .. You can use ctrl to lock horizontal position as you move note events up. You can also use the arrow key with relative mode on without having to worry about snapping to the grid.

Drums are an entire different issue, but have similar combinations that will work just this way.

The MIDI events in the project window is an entire different issue, but have similar combinations that will work just this way.

Re: Komplete VSTi (or similar ??)

GUI = Graphical User Interface (The part of the program you see)

Kontakt player and Kontakt LOOK nearly identical, you just can't get to the fancy controls when using Player.

I have VSL libraries and for sample orchestra, it is untouchable IMO. The sheer number, quality and unique articulation behaviors is staggering. It comes with a complexity cost however. Very expensive. Very complicated. But, when you get your head wrapped around their player which they call "Instrument", it is VERY VERY powerful. You can probably accomplish the same things in the scripting engine of Kontakt. But, no way do you have the same level of control with the out of the box LASS for example. Just my 2cents.

Also, to really use their products effectively you need to upgrade to the Pro player. This is back to them providing a FREE general sample playback engine, or an advanced PAY version. A lot of the larger sample library manufacturers are going to their own sample player and usually have a FREE and PAY version of that play back engine.

I have some of the SAMs free stuff from ages ago, and I converted from Garritan to VSL. All of those products are good. They all come with pros/cons. It's hard to say which ones would bug you, or that you couldn't live without. I chose the expense/complexity finally. Now that I have it rolling, I don't regret it for a second.

This is maybe a silly question but the right topic ...
If I don't have a separate control room and studio, mainly work alone, and my patch bay is set up so I hardly ever need to patch anything to break into the normaled connections, is there some real benefit of using the Cubase Control Room then? I've opened it and sort of know my way around and I see how it works but what's in there for me that I don't see?
Here's a few

Mono checking, multi monitor auditing, alternate mix checking, sub mix leveling, monitoring at a comfortable level without affecting the standards based level that exports ... I'm sure I'm missing a few.

But lets not assume that these are easy design fixes, they aren't. As soon as you attempt to resolve one thing, you create another problem.

And, fwiw, they don't need to invent anything, or come up with some new clever mechanism. The 6.5 mixer experience was outstanding, as was the control room. The reasons have been beat to death, I'll not rehash that. Looking forward to 7.5.

Re: One Question

In your opinion, is Halion 5 better than KONTAKT 5. Just trying to make up my mind about getting Komplete 9. How doesn't perform in Cubase compared to Halion 5.
Very difficult to answer ...

Kontakt integration into Cubase leaves a lot to be desired. No expression map support, clunky drag/drop support etc...

On the other hand Kontakt 3rd party library support is unrivaled. It has a very deep scripting engine, and a lot of editing functions that are amazing ... if you can stand to use that interface.

Halion is in many ways cumbersome and convoluted to get used to, but as a sound creation tool I think it is unmatched. As a sample library player ... eh maybe not. Plus Halion is not a great tool for creating 3rd party libraries. The Borgz seem to want to control that. So, it doesn't look like it will ever get in the game for that purpose with Kontakt.

I have both and find myself using H5 in nearly every project. But, I like to do custom sounds, not library playback. Plus I use VSL for orchestra. And the combination of HSO and VSL removes another reason to load up Kontakt.

So basically, if 3rd party library support is important to you, I'd go Kontakt hands down. Other than that, it is a tough call.

Re: SUGGESTIONS FOR NEW FEATURES

4/5. Newer tried macros. Maybe I should get into that… But why not make it a tool?!
4 already is, 5 can be done in a macro easily.

6. I have made two track with a drum loop. I group them, then I open one of them in audio editor and move using free warp. You can see the two tracks do not follow each other in the project window (see screen dump ): https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2425732/Cubase_Grouping_Warp.png

Am I missing something?!
AHHH, no I was missing something from your original explanation. Grouping the way you have it only applies to the arrange page. What you want to do is make a folder, move the files to the folder and enable group editing on the folder. Then it will behave closer to how you want. You need to read up on group editing though, it has its own little peculiarities that take a bit of getting used to.

Re: SUGGESTIONS FOR NEW FEATURES

1.) File --> Open Recent… (could be handy sometimes).

http://i782.photobucket.com/albums/yy105/jmcecil_photos/menu_zps99788c26.png

2.) Export audio in different ways than just Mixdown. For example being able to export all selected tracks as separate audio files (one long for each track) for mixing on other systems. Or other neat exporting features for audio.

might want to poke around the export options a bit

4.) New Tool - select everything from point of click and to the right on one track (tool from Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro). Good for moving a track without missing something that you can't see on your right.

5.) New Tool - select everything from point of click and to the right on all tracks (tool from Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro). This is awesome when wanting to move a part of a whole project without having to zoom everything out and selecting all parts. Should include automation and all other points.

macros are your friend

6.) When grouping two or more tracks (Command+G) or using the Track Folder it should also work for audio warp/free warp. It doesn't - the tracks go out of sync when doing warp on one audio file.

hmm ... not saying it isn't the case, but I've never had this happen and I use warping a lot. Maybe provide a sample project or something or files or maybe a detailed walk-thru.

7.) I have a window with the piano roll open on one screen and my arranger on the other screen. When I mark an event in the arranger window it shows automatically in the piano roll. BUT it shows the piano roll from the beginning of the event. Could you please make it update to show where the timeline/cursor is placed?

+1 .. but with the addition that the piano roll used to be much smarter about how it zoomed on an event when opened. It seems to have slowly devolved over versions. Please zoom to the event, start at cursor but as a preference, and/or to loop etc ...

Re: 7.5 keycommand focus

Thanks for your reply.

Maybe I have misunderstood the problem / bug that exists. Sorry if that's the case. I was under the impression that if the mix window is in focus, then some / all key commands relating to other windows (in my particular hypothetical situation, the project window) become inactive until you use the mouse to change focus back to the project window.
It's typically reported the other way round. When you are on the project window, quite a few of the mixconsole commands don't work, like changing the view using the configuration hotkeys.

However, there are (were?) scenarios that worked the other way as well, like opening an editor on selected items. I haven't tried. I just tested the scenario above and figured nothing has changed and pressed on.

Does mixer 1 work as expected or not?
That would be a big NO ...
it still doesn't save properly with workspaces (zoom + config)
it still has to have focus to use many mixconsole keycommands
it still loses focus if you use functions of the mixconsole itself
Mute/Mono/Solo don't activate/deactivate all the time
QLink doesn't work properly when soloing/muting... (probably associated somehow with the direct mute/solo bug)
it still doesn't keep z-Order correct for plugins
it still corrupts randomly requiring a "reset" that requires you to reset everything
Mixer configurations corrupt randomly on recall
Mixer presets do really odd things to the mixconsole when loading (zoom, visibility)
and more ...

in other words ... NO

Re: Stop putting FX and Group channels into folders

it is a "one click" solution.

Nope it is several click solution to open the folder and drag to the desired location. Then do it for the next one and the next and the next.

if you create an option (insert after selected track)
you have to click on that track before,
at least have the correct track selected.
again, incorrect. I am usually already on the track for which I wish to add something below. I actually can't think of any other rational location for an inserted track. Also, have you noticed how arbitrary even adding a regular track is? In large projects it can be like finding a needle in a haystack. The current methodology makes no sense in any workflow.

And that doesn't even take into account some deeper problems, like the ASIO lazy load problem.

I know what you are referring too that the plugins window is small.
No, in the first clip, the top of the dialog is off the screen and you can't get to it. There is no way to size the window to get to anything at the top edge. It's a screen size detecting bug.
in the 2nd, you can't have the plugins remain over the mixconsole if it has focus.

. I would be great if it were larger but is it bug? No its new feature request. Also wider the tracks view in the mixer and you will give you the full name of the plugins.

You've totally lost the thread .. this has nothing to do with anything I posted.
