Tips Tricks And Workflow Goodness.

Got a cool tip or macro to add to the list? Spotted an error or know a better way? Post it here and I'll add it on as and when I can!

There are lots more juicy tips in this thread that haven't been collated yet, or are a bit too general or complex to fit in this post. Have a wade through and see what nuggets you find.

Excellent Thread by Bane (looks like hundreds of hours of work here) thanks Curteye.

Great Site Full of Tutorials thanks Norbury Brook .

Best Ever Workflow Tip

The one piece of advice that keeps on coming up over and over: Learn the Key commands and assign your own. Almost every function can be set to a key command.

Here's an excellent thread by JMCecil with a utility for setting up and viewing key commands.

Project Setup

Make templates!

Get a session set up how you like it, tracks ready to go, input and output buses, group channels, folder tracks even favourite VST instruments and FX, this is a BIG timesaver.

Template From Existing Project

Save your project under a different name first (avoids ‘lost project embarrassment’). Delete all the Audio/MIDI stuff you don’t want in the template from the project window. Hit [CTL]+P to open pool and right [Option]click, select empty trash.
BEWARE, don’t choose erase unless you don’t need the files, choose the‘remove from pool’ option. Erase option will send your files to digital heaven. Then choose Save as Template option from the file menu.

Naming Tracks

In the Arrange window, click in the track name box to get a curser, type in the tracks name ie; ’Kick’, hit [TAB] (cursor jumps to next track name box) type in next one and repeat. Hit [Enter] to end.

Naming Tracks Inside Folders - by Xtigma

Rename all tracks inside a folder to the same name.
Type name in Folder Track, hold down [shift] + press [enter].

Rename all events on midi track to track's name - By Mozizo

Dbl click track name(fonts highligted with blue).
Press and hold one of the modifiers and press Enter.

Assigning Input Buses and Channel Outputs

In the Mix Console, select the required audio channels and as you assign the 1st channel (Drop down menu in Mix Console-Routing Tab) hold down [Shift] and each channel will be assigned incrementally.
Holding [Shift]+[ALT] will send all selected channels to the same Input bus or output.

To create a macro

File/Key Commands/Show Macros/New Macro-and name it.
Highlight the command from the commands window and hit 'Add Command' after each.
The new marco should now be visible in the macro folder in the commands window. Assign it to a Key of your choice.

New Track Macro - by Rhino

For creating a new track with all routing monitoring and FX settings from existing in one go.

Project - Duplicate Tracks
Edit - Select All On Tracks
Edit - Delete

Bounce In Place - by Winter Rat

Cubase Ninja Pro-Tools style Trim Automation - by Lukasbrooklyn

Set L and R Locators to next 2 markers - by SeeWhat

Locate to marker 1 then apply the following macro ({Alt}+{/}.
transport- set Left locator
transport- next marker
transport- set Right locator

Mix Console/FX

Default FX Presets - by Rhino

In any FX container window, next to the preset box hit the cubase icon and choose 'save as default preset'

Open all insert GUI on channel - By mozizo

[shift]+[alt]+[left click] on E button of a channel.
To close all of them [shift]+[left click] on E again.

Reset Channel Settings - by Bacizone

In Track Inspector - Alt+Click on the Bypass buttons will reset the settings of Insert / Strip / Equalizer / Send

Pre-Insert Volume Automation

Make sure the 'Use Mouse Wheel for Event volume and Fades' option is activated in Preferences. Editing/Audio page.
[ALT]+Click on an audio event to cut it around the area you want to change, then hover the mouse over it and mouse wheel up for louder (up to 24db) or down for softer. Will also work for multiple selections or entire Audio events. Won't work for an Audio Part unless you dissolve part first [CTL]+ right[option] click to open context menu and choose Audio/Dissolve Part.
[CTL]+M/Wheel near front of event to adjust fade in or near rear for fade out.

Replace all audio clip instances - by lukasbrooklyn

To replace all instances of an audio event in a project (akin to exchanging a sample in a sampler), put your replacement sample in the pool, the drag it from the pool whist holding shift, and drop it onto the event to be replaced.

MIDI Octave shortcut - by Stealth

Select midi event(s) in the project/arrange page then Shift + up or down arrow key to change octave.

MIDI Velocity Editing - by trashdinner

Hold shift + Ctrl, left click and drag up or down to change velocity on selected MIDI events.

Logical Editor - by Curteye

Being a MIDI guitarist from the early 90's the LE was a must learn.
Here is my approach(es):

1-When using it stop thinking like an artist/musician etc
and start thinking more 'scientific'. (similar but not quite the same)

2-Don't go in 'cold'. Decide want you want to accomplish and use a preset
that steers in that direction. There are many in Cubase. Tweak from there.

3-Save your tweak as a preset. You might need it later and you might forget how you got there.
(happened to me a lot at first)

4-Using LE custom presets along with Key Commands can really speed the workflow.

VST Instruments

Record VST instrument tracks without using groups or bounce or export - by JMCecil

F4 -> Output tab -> hit + sign and create a Stereo Output called whatever "VSTi Out". Do not assign this output to any of your audio card outputs.
On your Instrument track, set the output to the "VSTi Output" from the previous step.
Create a Stereo Audio Track in the project, set the INPUT to "VSTi Output"
Enable monitor and/or Record enable.

Layered Samples in Groove Agent SE - by trashdinner

If you add multiple sounds to a pad (by drag and dropping) use the first (top) option when dropping the sounds to a pad to layer them.
At first they will will not trigger at the same time but the different samples will trigger depending on the velocity so while the pad is selected, change the mode to "layer" instead of "velocity" in the main tab. Now they all trigger at the same time but you can't adjust the volumes or any other parameters of the different samples separately ... but here's how to do it:
There are 2 little buttons on the upper right side of Groove Agent SE, one is ABS or Rel (It's set to ABS by default)
and the other one is Pad or Sel (It's set to Pad by default). If you press the Pad button to switch it to Sel (while the multi samples pad is selected) you can now chose the sample you want to change the volume or any other parameters and it will only change the settings of that sample within the Pad instead of all the samples within the pad. So just select the sample, tweak some buttons and when you select another sample on the same pad you'll see the the tweaks you made won't affect the other samples :) I find That really usefull instead of having to have 3 midi notes for my kick sound, I just have one and tweak it inside Groove Agent SE.

Vari Audio

Variaudio shortcuts - by trashdinner

[tab] to switch between segment and pitch modes.
Hold [ctrl] while moving a note to snap to pitch.
Hold [shift] while moving a note to move it freely.

Editing of M/S - Recordings - by marQs

If recording i.e. a vocalist with M/S technique (to get that little air around) which I often do, record it to a stereo track (M = left/S = right) instead of two individual tracks. Mix6To2 or Voxengo MSED get you decoded in a second.

That way you can apply i.e. VariAudio + Warp to both channels while avoiding phase issues.

Works exactly the same if you track a DI guitar + an amp, up to 6 channels, see Rhino's tip on multitrack wave editing here

Video Scrubbing - by Carlo

Very nice for film-scoring if you play back a movie on a computer screen: Click directly in the Video Player window and drag the mouse left or right...

Toggle Full Screen Video - by BFred

Double-click anywhere in the video window to toggle full screen mode.

Inspector Gymnastics - by Skillet

Command click on Inspector items to open more than one. Shift click on any of them to close all of them at once. Handy when you use Inspector shortcuts since there doesn't seem to be a shortcut to close them all at once. You quickly loose view of some items using the shortcuts unless you always toggle them. Thankfully toggling any item (that may be open already) now brings it back into view though.

Resize Tool box (Arrange Window) - by Soul Burn

If you press right-click to open the tools menu and hold it pressed for about 5 seconds (it feels long), you can resize the shape of the toolbox. This lets you get to your tools with a shorter movement of the mouse.

Scissor Trick - by Bonso

Scissor Tool : alt/click when slicing an event divides the whole event into equal length sections.

Reverse Locators to skip section - by Rotund

If you just want to cut a section of a song, but want to hear the result first.
Simply engage cycle, then set your left locator to the end of the section to be cut.
Then set your right locator to the beginning of the section to be cut.
Yea, backwards.
Now playback from a point before the right locator.
The song will skip over the section enclosed in the markers.

Got something to share? Post your tips and ideas in this thread and I'll add them when I can.

Stereo to Mono Monitoring Listening Key Command

I'm fairly new to Cubase and I was searching for a way to switch from monitoring in stereo to monitoring in mono and I found it.

It's located in control room.

You get to control room by either selecting Devices > Control Room Mixer, or through mix console by selecting the top left button and checking the "control room/meter" box.

When control room is visible, look under the "Speakers" box. Here you can select through different monitors and you can change your monitoring from "stereo" to "mono" by clicking on the word "stereo".

If you are looking for a key command that does this, there isn't one. You have to assign it.

Go to File > Key Commands... > Control Room > Select Next Downmix Preset and assign a key command of your choice.

I hope this is helpful.

Re: 7.5.10 discussion and questions

The reason why I complain, is because I made a decision to only use legal software. I've spent thousands on buying plugins and software so that I can do my work. I buy software based on promises by suppliers for features, stability and support. I did not pay Steinberg half the money for half the program. The have my full payment - it is in their bank account, but I still have a program that is not up to standard. It is a tool to work with. My next step would be to make a choice if Steinberg will ever see my money again. That is also my right. But since I paid for 7.5, I expect them to deliver on my investment. Easy as that.

I bought it in July 2013. Slate was very helpful as the could not resolve my issue. I did demo Waves NLS as well, but eventually I bough StripBus. a steal at $29 or so.. Trust me, it is well worth it..

Re: 7.5.20 Impressions...

IMO , MixDebacle is geared towards 4K.

Plain and simple.

It clearly shows in the proportions, the space occupied by controls, etc.

The things is : its WAY too soon.

So all you trolls, if you don't like it though luck
Thank you, Dear.

I'm here since VST5/SX1 days (under different Alias). what about you ?...

One of the biggest complaints on this topics is the mixer. It looks a lot like Logic, Protools and somewhat like S1
No, it doesn't.

But hey, I'm troll anyway

i don't know if it is (surely it must have been conceived before 4k?); whatever the case, it's definitely not ergonomical on my 2,560 x 1,440-pixel native resolution. the thing is, i need to be able to read the inserts. and to be able to do that, the channels need to be extended horizontally so much so that they eat up too much screen real estate, and not many chan's fit in the mixer that way. someone just didn't put enough thought into it.

that's just one ill-executed implementation, of dozens. wish i got a cent for every 'load preset' dialog that loaded when i wanted to bring up a plugin's gui instead.

Ad new group to tracks (placement of group track)

When running this new command, which for the record is great, I think that the new group that's being created should end up being positioned after the last track that belongs to the group. Now the group ends up last in the track count (or in the "group folder") which doesn't really make sense to me. Best would be if there's an option to choose where it should end hip with the default being after the last "belonging" track.

Iro: Track Color Pack for Cubase

Hi everyone.

This is a neat little color pack I made for Cubase 7.5. For me, the default colors were not enough as I tend to have a lot of tracks, often with the same instruments, but with variations. It takes a considerable long time to make a set of new colors so I thought I would share it with you guys so you don't need to do this yourself. Am I not grateful? :D

The pack consists of 8 different main colors with 8 additional shades of each color. 64 colors in total!
Once you install the colors I suggest you do not tamper too much with the intensity/brightness as this can cause some of the colors to look alike. Yes, I did this myself and had to redo everything.

Please see the link to my blog for installation:

I do not have the privilege to test this on a mac or different versions of Cubase. If you are able to successfully apply these colors on another system please share how you did it.

Hope you enjoy it!

Can someone please clarify OUTPUTS vs CONTROL ROOM?

Hey guys, it took me awhile to wrap my head around the new Control Room in Cubase... I was used to just using Inputs and Outputs tab before. Looks like some confusion lingers...

Currently, my Control Room setup allows me to send 2 independent headphone mixes by assigning 2 cue mixes in the Control Toom STUDIO tab, and sending them out to my Saffire Line 3/4 (headphones 1) and Line 5/6 (headphones 2). Pretty cool so far cause it works.

Where I'm seriously confused is why I can't get any levels in the Main Mix part of the Control Room when I assign my "Monitors" (STUDIO tab) to Saffire Mon1/2.

I thought it was recommended to delete the busses in the OUTPUTS tab and just use the STUDIO tab. But in my case, unless I enable and connect the Saffire Mon1/2 in the OUTPUTS tab, I don't get ANY signal happening in the Main Mix portion of the Control Room. Headphones yes but Main Mix no.

I also notice the Main Out Stereo channel only appears in MixConsole if I have something enabled in the OUTPUTS tab. Oh I'm so confused...

I thought we were supposed to assign everything to the Control Room...

Can someone please clarify?

Change--> Mono Track to a Stereo Track on a fly!

Change--> Mono Track to a Stereo Track on a fly!

Just press on the "mono symbol-icon" on the track and it change from mono to stereo on a fly. (also work from Stereo to mono) That would be great especially working with audio tracks.

How many time have you needed to add a second new "Stereo Audio-track" to be able to run thru the "mono audio" thru a stereo plugin? ;)

Cubase 8 wishes

-A fix for the plugins that hides behind the full screen mixer
-When a plugin is in front, the plugin cell will be a different color so we know what plugin we are tweaking
-An option for the MCU or other controller jogwheel speed (select the speed and select between zoom relative or not)
-A "Pause" command that would be assignable as a key command
-seperate undo and redo on the mixconsole
-undo and redo on all plugins
-a new tab in the preferences that would let you select if you want Global or Session specific for different things (workspaces, Mixer layouts, VST Connection ect)
-Variaudio 2 that will include SSSS and SHHH sound detection so they don't sound robotic when tweaking pitch and
an attack and release slider that will set when straighten pitch will start and stop on the different notes
-the possibility to move tracks/channels in mixconsole
-A simple and effective plugin editor
-a fast and easy way to bounce vsti without the need to export and import in project or routing the vsti output to a track and recording. (Bitwig style)
-Remote control editor assignable to any midi device
-a Mono/Stereo Switch on all channels
-A plugin crash detector that will let you know what plugin crashed
-An enhanced hub that will allow to search project with a search bar, to assign stars and to filter acording to creation or modification date (like in the media bay) and the ability to share templates and presets with other users.
-reduce the time that a plugin show up when you clic on it (like when you ctr click)
-A duplicate relative that will let you duplicate multiple events with the same gap (if you have an event, a 1 bar gap and another event, it would duplicate those 2 with the 1 bar gap instead of right after the last event)
-a vocalign like feature that will let you sync 2 audio file
-a random option in the line tool options
-the ability to move around and apply new plugins and tweak existing ones on frozen tracks

Re: Cubase 8 wishes

Nice, I like the vocalign idea.

For me it would be:

1-bounce in place
2- improved quick controls: macro controls like ableton live + some LFO modulation for all quick controls
3- multitrack freezing
4- colorcoding the entire channel in the mix console
5- a vst rack for effects with the list of all plugins used as inserts in the project, with a search engine to access them quickly

Re: Cubase 8 wish

+1 for pretty much OP's whole list, and adding some of my own:

-More flexible Drum maps, like the ability to hide lanes, or color them.
-A smart tool (a la Sonar or Pro Tools).
-colorize the whole mixconsole strip.
-...a better looking, redesigned mixconsole (really, I hate how it is currently). Constantly re-zooming, no undo/redo.
-a matrix view (like Live, Bitwig and even Sonar).

Steinberg, UPDATE their GUI-Window Management ability ASAP!

Steinberg need to UPDATE their GUI-Window Management ability ASAP!

GUI-Window Management ability has been put on hold for many years now. Many of all the included functions in their softwares has not been updated to 2014/2015 standard. Its need to be overlooked and update ASAP.

What I'm talking about is simple tasks like any window or VST3 part plugins should always be able to "stay on top"-floating on other windows in Cubase/Nuendo. I suggest Steinberg follow Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 standard GUI-interface instead of continue build on their own GUI interface for windows managements.

I like the Cubase-GUI itself and that is all fine what I don't like is that they made own ("look like windows normal") "close" "minimize" symbols on example VSTs. I don't really understand why they continue to build own GUI for simple things that already exist in windows?

We have a AERO on Windows and Coco on OSX so why try to invent the wheel twice? If they just make so they follow the "standard" the graphical interface bugs in Cubase would lead to a minimum.

Another great idea would be to implemented INTEL AVX Technology in Cubase/Nuendo core. Let face it we all would benefit from that, include Steinberg!

Please check SONAR X-series and Skylight GUI Interface to get an idea what I'm talking about...

Example of bad GUI behaviors that are found during working with Cubase/Nuendo today!

*Plugins fall behind mixer-page, don't "stay on top"?

* Windows can´t "stay on top-floating"?

* Open editors like "Fader curves" restore down the arrangement window in the background?

* Pool window can't float on top of other views at all?

* Many editors and functions "GUI window" inside Cubase can't float on top the arrangement window, "stay on top"? Only full screen view?

* Not always remember specific window "last" -placed-position?

* Placing a VST plugin like KONTAKT, Omnisphere or other 3part VST on example 2:e or 3:e monitor, "mouse"-clicking on Window Desktop background will lead to both Cubase "interface" + all the open VST-plugins total disappears from all displays?

*and more..

I hope Steinberg do listen because I think there are more users then just me that want this change in my direction.
Otherwise I love Cubase and what are most important the stability are awesome! I'm really amazed how great Cubase 7 and 7.5 series sounds and work.

I hope my suggestion will make Cubase even better. :)

Best regards

Re: 8.0.10 is here

Well, it doesn't work. I put txt in that folder and hear sound glitches, like waves plugins was corrupt and bad sound throu them... Oh Lord. Didn't try old nVidia drivers.

Bummer. Was worth a try. It's solved the issue on two different DAWs for me.

The text file fix reduces the GPU and CPU requirement of any loaded Waves plugins. I've haven't tested this scientifically, but I could swear it's noticeably freeing up some CPU for me (in addition to the "choppy GUI" fix).

It does lower the FPS of a bunch of Dorrough meters I have open, so it's clearly doing some tangible throttling back.

If you try the March 2014 driver fix, be sure to check "clean install" (and once again if you end up reinstalling the latest Nvidia drivers).

Also, be sure to uncheck all the Nvidia bloatware.
