• Activating "Animate Note Cursor" in the Score Editor preferences no longer leads to an invisible note tool without preview capability.

Hardware
• When using an MR816 the hardware rack is always available from the drop down list.
• Changing the Digital I/O mode setting of MR 816 in the Control Panel or Audio Hardware Setup no longer renders the application unreliable.

Thanks for choosing Cubase!

Tips Tricks And Workflow Goodness.

Got a cool tip or macro to add to the list? Spotted an error or know a better way? Post it here and I'll add it on as and when I can!

There are lots more juicy tips in this thread that haven't been collated yet, or are a bit too general or complex to fit in this post. Have a wade through and see what nuggets you find.

Excellent Thread by Bane (looks like hundreds of hours of work here) thanks Curteye.
http://www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=130&t=23576#p151237

Great Site Full of Tutorials thanks Norbury Brook .

Best Ever Workflow Tip

The one piece of advice that keeps on coming up over and over: Learn the Key commands and assign your own. Almost every function can be set to a key command.

Here's an excellent thread by JMCecil with a utility for setting up and viewing key commands.
http://www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=181&t=31882

Project Setup

Make templates!

Get a session set up how you like it, tracks ready to go, input and output buses, group channels, folder tracks even favourite VST instruments and FX, this is a BIG timesaver.

Template From Existing Project

Save your project under a different name first (avoids ‘lost project embarrassment’). Delete all the Audio/MIDI stuff you don’t want in the template from the project window. Hit [CTL]+P to open pool and right [Option]click, select empty trash.
BEWARE, don’t choose erase unless you don’t need the files, choose the‘remove from pool’ option. Erase option will send your files to digital heaven. Then choose Save as Template option from the file menu.

Naming Tracks

In the Arrange window, click in the track name box to get a curser, type in the tracks name ie; ’Kick’, hit [TAB] (cursor jumps to next track name box) type in next one and repeat. Hit [Enter] to end.

Naming Tracks Inside Folders - by Xtigma

Rename all tracks inside a folder to the same name.
Type name in Folder Track, hold down [shift] + press [enter].

Rename all events on midi track to track's name - By Mozizo

Dbl click track name(fonts highligted with blue).
Press and hold one of the modifiers and press Enter.

Assigning Input Buses and Channel Outputs

In the Mix Console, select the required audio channels and as you assign the 1st channel (Drop down menu in Mix Console-Routing Tab) hold down [Shift] and each channel will be assigned incrementally.
Holding [Shift]+[ALT] will send all selected channels to the same Input bus or output.

Macros

To create a macro

File/Key Commands/Show Macros/New Macro-and name it.
Highlight the command from the commands window and hit 'Add Command' after each.
The new marco should now be visible in the macro folder in the commands window. Assign it to a Key of your choice.

New Track Macro - by Rhino

For creating a new track with all routing monitoring and FX settings from existing in one go.

Project - Duplicate Tracks
Edit - Select All On Tracks
Edit - Delete

Bounce In Place - by Winter Rat http://www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=181&t=30597

Cubase Ninja Pro-Tools style Trim Automation - by Lukasbrooklyn http://www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=181&t=38182

Set L and R Locators to next 2 markers - by SeeWhat

Locate to marker 1 then apply the following macro ({Alt}+{/}.
transport- set Left locator
transport- next marker
transport- set Right locator

Mix Console/FX

Default FX Presets - by Rhino

In any FX container window, next to the preset box hit the cubase icon and choose 'save as default preset'

Open all insert GUI on channel - By mozizo

[shift]+[alt]+[left click] on E button of a channel.
To close all of them [shift]+[left click] on E again.

Reset Channel Settings - by Bacizone

In Track Inspector - Alt+Click on the Bypass buttons will reset the settings of Insert / Strip / Equalizer / Send

Audio

Pre-Insert Volume Automation

Make sure the 'Use Mouse Wheel for Event volume and Fades' option is activated in Preferences. Editing/Audio page.
[ALT]+Click on an audio event to cut it around the area you want to change, then hover the mouse over it and mouse wheel up for louder (up to 24db) or down for softer. Will also work for multiple selections or entire Audio events. Won't work for an Audio Part unless you dissolve part first [CTL]+ right[option] click to open context menu and choose Audio/Dissolve Part.
[CTL]+M/Wheel near front of event to adjust fade in or near rear for fade out.

Replace all audio clip instances - by lukasbrooklyn

To replace all instances of an audio event in a project (akin to exchanging a sample in a sampler), put your replacement sample in the pool, the drag it from the pool whist holding shift, and drop it onto the event to be replaced.

MIDI

MIDI Octave shortcut - by Stealth

Select midi event(s) in the project/arrange page then Shift + up or down arrow key to change octave.

MIDI Velocity Editing - by trashdinner

Hold shift + Ctrl, left click and drag up or down to change velocity on selected MIDI events.

Logical Editor - by Curteye

Being a MIDI guitarist from the early 90's the LE was a must learn.
Here is my approach(es):

1-When using it stop thinking like an artist/musician etc
and start thinking more 'scientific'. (similar but not quite the same)

2-Don't go in 'cold'. Decide want you want to accomplish and use a preset
that steers in that direction. There are many in Cubase. Tweak from there.

3-Save your tweak as a preset. You might need it later and you might forget how you got there.
(happened to me a lot at first)

4-Using LE custom presets along with Key Commands can really speed the workflow.

VST Instruments

Record VST instrument tracks without using groups or bounce or export - by JMCecil

F4 -> Output tab -> hit + sign and create a Stereo Output called whatever "VSTi Out". Do not assign this output to any of your audio card outputs.
On your Instrument track, set the output to the "VSTi Output" from the previous step.
Create a Stereo Audio Track in the project, set the INPUT to "VSTi Output"
Enable monitor and/or Record enable.

Layered Samples in Groove Agent SE - by trashdinner

If you add multiple sounds to a pad (by drag and dropping) use the first (top) option when dropping the sounds to a pad to layer them.
At first they will will not trigger at the same time but the different samples will trigger depending on the velocity so while the pad is selected, change the mode to "layer" instead of "velocity" in the main tab. Now they all trigger at the same time but you can't adjust the volumes or any other parameters of the different samples separately ... but here's how to do it:
There are 2 little buttons on the upper right side of Groove Agent SE, one is ABS or Rel (It's set to ABS by default)
and the other one is Pad or Sel (It's set to Pad by default). If you press the Pad button to switch it to Sel (while the multi samples pad is selected) you can now chose the sample you want to change the volume or any other parameters and it will only change the settings of that sample within the Pad instead of all the samples within the pad. So just select the sample, tweak some buttons and when you select another sample on the same pad you'll see the the tweaks you made won't affect the other samples :) I find That really usefull instead of having to have 3 midi notes for my kick sound, I just have one and tweak it inside Groove Agent SE.

Vari Audio

Variaudio shortcuts - by trashdinner

[tab] to switch between segment and pitch modes.
Hold [ctrl] while moving a note to snap to pitch.
Hold [shift] while moving a note to move it freely.

Editing of M/S - Recordings - by marQs

If recording i.e. a vocalist with M/S technique (to get that little air around) which I often do, record it to a stereo track (M = left/S = right) instead of two individual tracks. Mix6To2 or Voxengo MSED get you decoded in a second.

That way you can apply i.e. VariAudio + Warp to both channels while avoiding phase issues.

Works exactly the same if you track a DI guitar + an amp, up to 6 channels, see Rhino's tip on multitrack wave editing here http://www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=181&t=49327#p301663

Video

Video Scrubbing - by Carlo

Very nice for film-scoring if you play back a movie on a computer screen: Click directly in the Video Player window and drag the mouse left or right...

Toggle Full Screen Video - by BFred

Double-click anywhere in the video window to toggle full screen mode.

General

Resize Tool box (Arrange Window) - by Soul Burn

If you press right-click to open the tools menu and hold it pressed for about 5 seconds (it feels long), you can resize the shape of the toolbox. This lets you get to your tools with a shorter movement of the mouse.

Scissor Trick - by Bonso

Scissor Tool : alt/click when slicing an event divides the whole event into equal length sections.

Reverse Locators to skip section - by Rotund

If you just want to cut a section of a song, but want to hear the result first.
Simply engage cycle, then set your left locator to the end of the section to be cut.
Then set your right locator to the beginning of the section to be cut.
Yea, backwards.
Now playback from a point before the right locator.
The song will skip over the section enclosed in the markers.

Got something to share? Post your tips and ideas in this thread and I'll add them when I can.

Macro for bouncing without any processing from the main-outs

Hi. I have made macros for bouncing the selected part without any processing from the main output. It's actually an updated version of a macro I had found on the internet a long time ago. I found myself using it a lot lately, so I had to share it.

There are two versions. The second version also mutes the part that's bounced. And that needs 3 project logical presets to be made.

To use it, firstly you must adjust the settings in your export window. Select main outs. "Import into project" and "Close after export" must be selected. Also give a name like "bounce" or anything, and click that arrow on the right, and select "auto update name". Actually, these are pretty basic settings.

Select the track and the part you want to bounce and fire the macro. 8-)

Here is the recipe :

Mixer - Bypass: Channel Strip on Main Mix
Mixer - Bypass: EQs on Main Mix
Mixer - Bypass: Inserts on Main Mix
Edit - Solo
Transport - Locators to Selection
File - Export Audio Mixdown
Audio Export - Sync Channel Selection with MixConsole
Audio Export - Increase Counter Start Value
Audio Export - Perform Audio Export
Navigate - Bottom
Edit - Deactivate All Solo States
Navigate - Up
Navigate - Bottom
Edit - Select None
Mixer - Bypass: Channel Strip on Main Mix
Mixer - Bypass: EQs on Main Mix
Mixer - Bypass: Inserts on Main Mix

Re: Tips Tricks And Workflow Goodness.

Here's my take on bouncing as a lazy guy.

Macro for bouncing without any processing from the main-outs (and also auto muting what's bounced)

http://www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=181&t=51477

usage: select the track and part you want to bounce. fire the macro.

The cool thing here is, you set the export window once, and bounce whatever you can, no need to select output when exporting, no need to assign your vsti or audio output to a specific group etc. Your bounce will be unaffected by your main output eq / insert chain.

How You Can Help

Getting Started

Welcome new users! If you have purchased Cubase and are unsure of where to start, look no further. Familiarize yourself with the concept of licensing then move on to the first steps .

Licensing

In order to keep Cubase from being downloaded illegally, Steinberg has implemented a licensing solution to protect legitimate users.

This works by packaging software with an elicenser or "dongle", on which licenses can be stored. Licenses are activated by entering an activation code, which is discussed below. Any computer with the software installed and an elicenser in the USB port is authorized for use. Note that an elicenser can only run on one computer at a time.

Some Steinberg Products, including AI or LE versions of software do not require an elicenser. In this case, a "soft elicenser" is automatically stored to your computer's memory. For portability, transferring these licenses to USB elicensers is optional.

If you encounter any errors during the licensing process please consult the corresponding section below.

First Steps

1) Run the installer on the installation disc. Remember to install this for all users on your system just in case.

2) Open the elicenser control center, which should have installed alongside Cubase, with your USB elicenser (dongle) plugged in. Elements does not require a USB elicenser.
See the following image: Elcc.jpg
3) Click Enter Activation Code and type in the code that was printed on a slip in your package. Once you have finished, a license should appear in a new window, drag it to the desired elicenser.

4) Don’t forget to Register your product online at MySteinberg, so you have support if you misplace your USB elicenser or have any other troubles.

Before you even start up Cubase download the latest update to the e-licenser control center.

This should be updated regularly.

How to make your Forum Signature

Go to your User Control Panel here in the forum, then under the Profile tab, find the Edit Signature on the left. Signatures will help other users understand your system setup when you post your problems.

Bug Reports and Contacting Steinberg

How do I report a problem with Cubase?

If you still need to contact Steinberg, check this out.

Just visit MySteinberg , log in with your Username and Password, then go to Support Request Form on the right. Now fill it out and send your request. You should receive an automatic email to your registered email address, confirming your form was successfully submitted. If you can’t find one, you should check your Spam folders.

Re: Cubase 8.0?

In fact map all the years music trade shows should give one an idea of the dates of any new releases.

I´d rather have some third party developers adopt VST3. Native Instruments should update their freakin´ Komplete Package I´ve purchased, finding out in horror that every plugin and instrument are still VST2. What a rip-off.

Re: Why 7.5 and 7.5.1 is not called beta?

Cubase 7.5.1 works really good for me, no apparent show-stoppers. Actually it works better for me than anyone of the big ones out there(Logic, PT11 are the ones i have extensive experience on with a bias in my knowledge towards Logic).
What I mean is that it doesn´t feel beta. If you want beta, try LPX and come back here after trying to produce a full modern production, and tell us all about it.

Released today is my FM Synth collection, made for the dubstep/electro dancefloors of 2014. Certainly not your average FM sounds, these are dark, gritty and aggressive tones - created from my own SYSEX modifying programs.

http://www.loopbased.com/electro-house-loops/fm-synths.html

Each of the sounds have been recorded direct from the hardware, with no processing or after effects - making them mean, clean and raw. Modulated loops have been recorded with live parameter changes for a living, organic quality.

Enjoy!

Re: 7.5.20 Impressions...

LOL.
Imperial Theme? yes, it looks great.
But...
It´s ONLY the mixer (!) - incl. stupid tiny buttons!!, not scalable, problems with small flat screens, e.g.
nevertheless:
Reaper´s menu´s, plugin windows, preferences, etc. etc. looks like Office Windows 95 GUI style (!)
very ugly. Sorry.

Re: Foodstock 2014

I'm already volunteering Glyn's song Hunger from the Musicians for Haiti precursor to Sound of Humanity because it's so damn appropriate.

Foodstock 2014

Some of you may remember a discussion I posted back in December (or maybe early January) about holding a music festival on behalf of Sound of Humanity that would benefit underprivileged families in the NJ area. I've reached out to a number of you in the greater NYC metro area and have received great responses / support for this endeavor, but now I think I can expand this to make it a truly global event.

To recap some specifics:

1. We're having 10 musical acts, including our very own Mark Petruzzi and Tom Zartler, play 30 minutes each with a 15 minute setup/tear down between acts.

2. Price of admission will be 64 oz of canned goods per person, all of which to be given to Community Foodbank of NJ, a highly rated 501(c)3 charity that works with over 400 food banks in northern and central NJ.

3. The event will hopefully be simulcast over the Internet via HomeGrownRadioNJ.org (subject to whether I can get Verizon to pony up free 4G Internet connectivity from the venue).

The date is August 30 from 11am - 6:30pm EDT.

The thought that just came to me after a humorous comment I made to Sav on Facebook is this: in between acts, I will need music for when I'm not waxing philosophical on the next act to perform. Why not, then, play music from the people here on the forum?

Since this is a benefit "concert," I'd like the music to be positive in it's general attitude, either in the feeling you get when you hear the music or in the lyrics. Interested? Reply in here only. Do not reply on the Sound of Humanity page on Facebook, because we're keeping tight control on the release of information until the PR campaign gets in full swing.

I'm not guaranteeing that your music will get played, unfortunately. I'm still working out the logistics with the municipality where the event will be held (Roxbury, NJ), but I'm 99% confident that I can make this work. This is a great chance for people "across the pong" and elsewhere to be a part of this in its inaugural year without actually being here. And, of course, I'd love to have your music played since I know how much incredible talent we have here on the board.

Thoughts?

Re: 7.5.20 Impressions...

I'm not happy with the 7.5.20 update, because now all MIDI Devices disconnect everytime closing a project.
(i.e. the output channnels set in the MIDI Device Manager change to 'Not Connected', if there is a MIDI Device automation track in the Project Window.)
Before opening another project, Cubase now has to be closed and started again to reconnect the MIDI Devices.
It happens on both Windows and Mac.
It does not happen in 7.5.10 or before. I'll stay on 7.5.10 until this is fixed.
There is a separate thread in the Issues forum:

Re: 7.5.20 Impressions...

I love the way self acclaimed professionals act in our days .. children at play again .
7.5.20 works fine here 4 days 12 hours a day and no issues , it's a bit sluggish with the gui opening the plugin's and vsti's but it hasn't failed to do so ,so i can live with that

Professionals! Give me a break. I would expect professionals to be articulate, know how to express themselves with grammatical coherence and be able to spell. Mind you I expect the real professionals are too busy being professional to write some of the moronic stuff some of those claimants post here.

Re: UR28M and Cubase Control Room - do they play nice togeth

Hello Alexis,

You're probably concerned that the Control room as well as the UR28M both handle some of the same functions - mono, mute, dim etc. The HW controls are independent from the SW controls so actually you can use either - whichever is handiest or appropriate at the moment. (using both together is possible but not especially useful ;) )

I usually recommend users to use Mix 1 for the primary Artist Mix. The main reason for this is that a number of things are automatically wired to Mix 1 by default (and can't be altered). E.g. the Phones 1 are hardwired to Mix 1 whereas the Phones 2 can be switched between all mixes - it follows therefore that phones 2 should be the engineers phones, leaving the phones 1 relegated to the artist cue ergo, mix 1. The 2TR Input is also hardwired to mix 1, making this an ideal Talkback if necessary, without sacrificing a proper input (note this function is then completely independent of the talkback function in the CR - which would typically not be used - set up) this in addition to it's usual function.

Most important - get it clear in your mind that the mixes and the outputs are two different things and not to be confused. Once you've got that firmly implanted, the rest will fall into place.

Re: Cubase 7.5 on a Retina Macbook pro (low-res!)

I was told by the apple store sales person that there are apps you can use to change the resolution. I got a RMBP 2 years ago but returned it for a MBP I'm thinking of getting a new one. I would appreciate some feedback from someone that is using a RMBP with Cubase 7.5. Does it work normally like on MBP?

Not sure why it would be an issue, I'm running 7.5 on a new MacBook Pro Retina and it works great. I went with the top model, so it has the dedicated graphics in addtion to Iris...maybe that helped??

Re: What is next?

Rumor has it that Chord Tracker will be replaced with Song Tracker which will compose songs for you including lyrics which will be sung by an advanced version of VariAudio. Writers block or knowledge of music will be a thing of the past. Moving forward, all you'll need to do is choose a musical genre and tell Cubase what mood you are in via emoticons or by linking Cubase to your FaceBook account. Also a new artificial intelligence engine will mix and master "your" song, upload it automatically to iTunes and bill you.

Re: Yosemite :-)

Hell yeah, I played the guinea pig this week and i can tell you 2 things about this ( I am a registered Apple Developer btw).

- 7.5.(2.0) installer does not work on Yosemite (So had to reinstall 10.9.3 (+ install Cubase 7.5.2 there) + then upgrade to 10.10 dp1)

- Although the installer is not working , after upgrading a 10.9.3 with cubase 7.5.2 installed, it runs perfectly here. I am seeing a little less cpu usage and my projects seem to load faster. All plugins (+installers) work in 10.10.

My system:
MacPro 2008 8-core, 8gb ram, Apricorn solo x2 (sata3 interface with 2x250 samsung SSD 840 in Raid0) ,RME Fireface 400.

Re: Copying Inserts and Pasting them??

It's easier if you know what you intend to do first. You can just select all the channels, link or Qlink them, then select and setup your insert (or other) effect and it will automatically do the same on all selected channels.

If you've already setup the effect in one channel, then select the other channels using alt click, then using the triangle pull down menu at the top rightmost corner of the mixer, select 'copy first channels settings', then again and this time select 'paste to selected channels'. This will however indeed copy all channels settings.

If as above you've already setup the effect in one channel, but you only want to copy the particular insert effect, then select the other channels using alt click and then link the channels. Select the effect on the second selected channel and it will also appear on all selected channels. now go to the first channel and activate the effects window. Because all channels are linked, if you just do a tiny tweek of each of the controls (turn a knob 1 increment higher or lower then return it to it's previous position) all the specific effects on all the other selected channels will spring to the same settings.

Don't forget to de-link afterwards

Re: Copying Inserts and Pasting them??

BriHar,
OK, your methods work great. Only one issue. When I paste 30 channels of plug ins....Cubase wants to open 30 instances of that plug in. Is there a way to paste these plugs without the GUI opening for each instance?

D

Try This
Go to preferences
VST
Plug Ins
Untick Open Effects editor arfter loading it

Re: Mac, Cubase 7.5 SSD and Ram upgrade

I was thinking, go to the computer store have them install everything and enclose my current Harddrive. Use OSX Recovery and clone my current Harddrive to the newly installed SSD.
That's one way of doing things. However, I usually "clean up" the computer at the same time. That means that I reformat the drive and reinstall everything from scratch. Just make sure that you de install any licenses (check the manufactures website how to do this) otherwise they will be lost. This usually gives a niftier computer, since a lot of junk (that will be reinstalled with clone backup) gets thrown out, but can take a considerable time and effort. But I think it's worth it.

My question is can I expect Cubase, all plugins and application to work exactly as before? As anyone ever done this? Will I have to renter serial numbers?
This is a bit trickier issue though. With regard to Cubase (and any dongle protected software), there is no issue as the license is contained in the dongle. Just install it on the new drive. The same could be said for software that is protected by a "simple" serial number and, of cause, unprotected software.

When it comes to software that is protected by C/R (challenge/response) protection systems, things get a bit trickier. Not all licenses will transfer correctly. Not even with a cloned drive. Some C/R systems even look at your hardware. These may decide that your computer is unauthorized if you changed any hardware, say the graphics card or added memory. Since you are changing you HD to an SSD, they would probably affect you.

It always a good idea to check any C/R protected software vendor's site for any information about moving the software from one installation (in this case drive) to another. And de-authorize the software, and authorize it on the new drive later.

As anyone ever done this?
Millions have, and many have run into trouble by taking the fast and easy lane. I understand if all this sound a bit complicated. But a bit of preparation can save you a lot of grief later.

Re: Mac, Cubase 7.5 SSD and Ram upgrade

@Svenne

Great advice on all points. I could not agree more.

Using the old SampleTank 2 stuff got me into mucho
probs with the challenge/response stuff.

Any change in the hard drive or logic board would put me in a bag of hurt.

Made me appreciated the dongle system.

With projects in the cloud and a dongle in pocket a user can go anywhere
in the world and after obtaining a 'puter, get to work in no time.

@AP Good question and Good Luck!

Re: 7.5 issues after Ram and SSD upgrade

Once you go SSD you never go back. I'm using 3 SSD drives now, one for OS, the other for vst/sample libraries and third audio project file and other misc stuff.

Re: How to record the chords under the pads

HALion/HALion Sonic does not send the MIDI from the onscreen GUI back to Cubase to be recorded. That means that you can not record by clicking on the keyboard or pads in the GUI.
The easiest way to record the Trigger Pads would be to assign keys to the Trigger Pads (I have mine assigned to the eight highest notes on the keyboard). Then, once the notes are assigned, play the notes on your MIDI controller keyboard. Of course, have the controller routed to a MIDI track to the instrument or use an instrument track.

Re: Performing live with Cubase

When I connect my projector my Macbook automatically creates a second screen. I move the video on to the second screen and then select ‘full screen mode’. The video then fills the whole screen, I have to be careful that when I’m using my mouse I don’t accidentally move it on to the video!!!

Why is Steinberg support so GOOD!!!!???

Why is Steinberg support so GOOD!!!!??? :) :) :) :) :) :)

I have had nothing but good experiences with SB support. Both Chris and Jeff (no, not me  ) have been very knowledgeable and helpful over the years. Support tickets are ALWAYS responded to, and promptly. The one time they weren't, there was some sort of glitch in the SB support system, and the team was apologetic and made efforts to fix the issue ASAP. Kudos to the SB support staff! :)

Cheers.
