Hey Charlie! That's right - a license can only reside on one dongle. The second can ofcourse be used to spread licenses, like PG said, or just as a hardware backup for when the old one starts going bad.

Re: Making cd for universal use/ as comercials

I have removed the file name, and used only numbers.
CD-Text is not about file names, but about burning CD title, artist and song titles with the audio onto the CD. Did you burn with the highest speed or a slower speed? I always burn 24x media at 16x maximum, but prefer 8x. This can make quite a difference to the car player. (Especially with CD-RW media)

Re: VERY FRUSTRATED

It's quite simple, really. You have software on your unconnected computer (eLicenser) that checks a dongle for holding a license for another software (Cubase). Now you update Cubase - and therefor change the license on the dongle. eLicenser cannot know about the new version, so doesn't recognize your new license as valid anymore, even for the older version. Ergo: always keep eLicenser updated...

Re: Wavelab 8 as my external editor with Cubase 7.5 x64?

Yeah, like stingray said, it's only opening a file from the export audio in Cubase into Wavelab that's possible. Not how it used to be pre Cubase 4 (IIRC), where Wavelab could be integrated in a way that after editing there, the edited file was directly showing in the Cubase project.

I think mr roos was referring to me using Cubase and Wavelab at the same time, where Wavelab records my outboard mix while Cubase plays its tracks, both using the same audio interface (not so much legacy at all though..) ;)

Re: Fostex X-15 Cassettes Transfer

I notice that when I go to the 'ASIO E-MU Tracker Pre' sub-menu it shows the In ports as Inactive (see pic attached). Is this the problem? If so, how to fix it?
Yes, you've done step 1 correctly, which is assigning the right interface for Cubase. Step 2 is to assign these inputs to Cubase buses, which is done in the VST Connections dialog (from Devices menu). There are tabs there for input and output: simply create input and output buses and assign your interface channels to Cubase buses. After that, new tracks can be assigned an input and output bus to use for recording / playback.

Re: Fostex X-15 Cassettes Transfer - Best Approach

Always get the best (hottest) possible signal in the analog domain. With 4-track tape your pretty safe regarding unsuspected transients, so yeah, max out the Fostex and set the E-mu analog input gain as high as possible without clipping. Just record this signal in Cubase without touching input gains or whatever. Make sure to record to a 24-bit file.

A tip for alignment later (I believe you transfer 2 of 4 at a time): Get a high transient sound (like a handclap or such) at the start of all 4 tracks of the same recording; this will make alignment in Cubase much, much easier.

Re: Does WaveLab allow crossfades on CDs?

It was very easy to adjust crossfades and add indexes to the timeline.
How does WaveLab address this?
Is it accomplished on the timeline or in a list editor?
Is there a limit to the crossfade time?
Can you freely place CD indexes anywhere once you have your timeline/crossfades setup?
It is done on a timeline in an environment called the Montage, where you can also place CD-tracks on different tracks (and much, much more!). I don't think there is a limit on crossfade time - it would surprise me if there is. And CD-markers can be placed freely (in full Wavelab, that is). Also, Audio in Pauses is supported, which allows you to keep audio running between a track's end marker and the next track's start marker (live CDs for instance).
Just give the trial version a go!

Re: Workflow tips for converting cassettes to individual son

- Should I use the Audio File workspace or the Audio Montage workspace?
The Montage for sure.

- Which marker types (if any) would be best for isolating and naming individual songs/regions within the files?
No markers necessary, but CD markers may come in handy to enter metadata for individual songs. In the montage, you first see your audio file just like above (as one clip), then use the scissor tool to cut the separate songs. Now you have multiple clips, which are just representations of that particular part of the source wav file. By adjusting the sides of the clips, you can change the cuts after the fact. Clips can have their own processing, but also the tracks on which they reside can. You can create another stereo track and drag clips over if you want the same proces done to them by track effects.

- If my goal is to end up with a bunch of individual song files that are normalized for loudness, what's a productive workflow for getting there?
You could apply effects on individual clips, or use the meta normalizer. I'd be careful with cassette recordings though, since they possibly are quite close together already.

Re: Editing Audio

What is the opinion of the forum regarding using the 64bit version?
Well AFAIK, some VST3 plugins need a 64-bit host, but other than that I don't think it's 'better, faster, stronger' (to quote Daft Punk).

The problem is  editing a file with the loudness window being displayed. This has to be recalculated and it's much slower than redrawing the edited portion of a gpk file.
Ah, makes sense. If you mean the loudness representation of the waveform at hand, that is. Considering you're working with 30 minute files, I'd say 5 seconds is pretty fast! 8-)

Re: Ozone 5 plugin incompatibility

If I understand PG correctly, he is suggesting that your plug-in settings need to be saved before "rendering", otherwise WaveLab will have no way of knowing the changes you have made to a particular preset within the plug-in, due to the fact that "rendering" is an off-line process... and that Wavelab's procedure is to open a "NEW" instance of the plug-in to process the file(s).
No, that's not quite correct. For rendering, the new instance of the plugin is told by Wavelab to copy the current settings of the original plugin - whether these are saved by the user is not relevant. This is where Ozone is lacking, since it holds some plugin settings in a place that is not according to the VST standard.

Re: Multiple Tracks from Yamaha MW10C

From the specs of the device: "lets you easily record mono inputs or two- track stereo mixes of multiple sources to your computer." So it should indeed be possible. Make sure Cubase uses the ASIO driver of the MW10C and check VST Devices and VST Connections to see how the interface is defined. Then assign the inputs to new stereo or mono tracks in Cubase and you're good to go.

You might however want to try the following: copy the WaveLab 6 folder from your old computer to the laptop, download and install the latest update for the eLicenser, plug in your dongle and try running the WaveLab 6 exe! Completely unsupported, but it just might work ....
There's no need for that anymore (at least not for Windows 7), since there's a full WL6.1.1 version available for download from Steinberg. See WaveLab 6.1.1 Update here - might work on Windows 8 too. It's a full installer, so only a license on your dongle needed.

Though it still is rather recent (14 July 2014), I'm afraid you may have a problem with WL6 on XP when your license on the USB-key changes to a different version number. Re: Massive Cubase Folder on hard drive

So I'm thinking I can just keep doing what I've been doing (saving a project in Mike's Projects) but then when I'm done save the new project and relevant audio files in it's new folder and delete the rest.
It's better to start with a new subdirectory in Mike's Projects, and point Cubase to this new directory when starting a new project (best done from a template). That way, all relevant files are already where you want them and mistakes can be prevented. Also file names make more sense that way - i.s.o. a new guitar track being called 'Guitar_05' because in other projects there were 4 completely different guitar takes. By using 'remove unused files' and deleting them via Trash, you make sure that you remain with anything that's used in the project, and when done you can move the whole directory to a backup drive.

You should use the montage of Wavelab and put the recorded file there. Then you don't have to split it, just create clips. And as PG said above, in WL Elements a clip is a CD-track, and you could render to individual tracks as well from the montage, leaving the original file intact.

Re: Maximizer v. Limiter (v. Brickwall Limiter)?

People need to be aware of the difference between digital clipping and true peak clipping (inter sample clipping). A perfectly non-clipping audio file can still produce clipping in the DA stage of converting to analog. So maximizing or limiting to 0 dBfs is always a bad idea if true peaks are not considered. Certainly not when further conversion (to MP3 for example) is to take place.

Re: Why are there options when importing "unalterable" DDP F

I think there should be a different kind of marker for non CD-tracks. Because a physical CD that really gets played does have benefits in CD End and Start markers. First of all, you can see during the pause the negative time, but more importantly, when played in shuffle mode, you don't get the audio in pauses. This is especially useful with live CDs where often the audio between the tracks is announcing or leading up to the next trach, which is irrelevant in shuffle play. Just an observation..

Re: Monoizing a stereo file...the visual

I must say it could be helpful, seeing mono and stereo in 'stereo' files. But the way this StereoMonoizer shows it looks a bit clumsy to me though.

I would propose a new tab in Wavelab, next to the spectrum and loudness tabs, indicating not only stereo or mono but phase coherence. Or, stereo 'spread' if you will - very helpful in seeing not only if a file is really stereo, but also showing mono compatibility (how much of Left is anti-Right). Just a thought: Red color is R channel only, Blue is L channel only, Green is L=R and say, Yellow is L=-R. And all shades of inbetween colors..

Re: Cubase 7.5 update problem.

What version of Cubase did you buy? And what is/are the licenses now on your eLicenser? Any license can only be activated once, and point updates like 7.5.40 never have a separate license.

You have to understand that the eLicenser is something like a wallet containing your licenses - you don't activate the dongle itself and don't need to buy a new one unless it physically doesn't work anymore. DO update the eLicenser software though, which is a go-between between the 'wallet' and the installed software (Cubase). BTW, the 25 hours I think you mean is a time limited license for the Fraunhofer MP3 codec only.

Re: Moving Wavelab from Windows to Mac

And don't forget to intall the latest e-Licenseer software on your Mac (if indeed we're talking full Wavelab with a USB-key).

Re: Basic Audio Input to Audio Track

Unofficially is fine, thanks ;) (but there is a thumbs up icon next to 'quote' in each message) Did you check if Windows has the audio coming in? If you select the MotU as Windows recording source?

Re: Basic Audio Input to Audio Track

Planarchist has some good points. What I meant with checking the input as Windows recording source, was to see if the interface does send it to Windows - and that way leave Cubase out of it for troubleshooting. Check 'Sound' from Windows configurations and select the 'Recording' tab. If you there select the MotU ASIO and send some sound into it, Windows should show (and play) that audio. If that is correct, your problem is within Cubase and its settings.

Re: FM Synthesis (Artist 6)

I would certainly take everything dry. Any EQ or effect applied would be a misrepresentation of the thing you want to showcase. As a sidenote, and I'm sure you planned this, each sound should be played in in a manner that suits the sound. I mean, a pizzicato string sound needs a different sequence than a saxophone sound.

As for the volume - if I'd be doing this, I would normalize to the same loudness, as opposed to volume. If you own Wavelab, this is quite easy to do in a batch. I'm not sure what Cubase can do in this regard..

Re: FM Synthesis (Artist 6)

Hobbyists are also allowed to buy Wavelab.. 8-) But for just this purpose it would be a bit over the top indeed.

The thing with normalizing in the normal sense is, that it puts each (or all) sounds to have their highest volume peak level at the set value. This can to the listener still lead to a wide variety in perceived loudness. For example, a full chord plus left hand hammond at -1 dB sounds way louder than a drum sound at -1 dB with regular hits. Hence my suggestion of loudness normalizing; all sounds have the same loudness of, say, -12 dB RMS. Again, I don't know if this can be done in Cubase, either full or Artist..

Re: FM Synthesis (Artist 6)

I think compression, like EQ or effects, would change the character of the sounds you are after also, but would indeed get the perceived volume more coherent.

As for Wavelab, AFAIK only the full version has the batch processor, but I'm not sure which version has what since I've always used the full version. The trial version idea should work fine I guess.
