Please obey copyrights!

Dear forum members,

It is important that everyone thinks twice before posting links to content outside the forum. Because the legal position differs from country to country, we have to remain vigilant that posts do not contain links to copyrighted material where the copyright owner is not posting the link. Special attention needs to be paid when you post links to music downloads as well. This means that we might remove links from posts with no further discussion or justification if there's any doubt.

YouTube etc.
Please do not post links to music tracks or videos unless 1) the site is licenced to do so 2) you own the copyright in that content or 3) you have permission from the copyright holder. Sites like YouTube are currently in high level legal negotiation with various labels, publishers and collection societies and as such Steinberg cannot allow links to tracks and videos on these sites.

Steinberg obviously wants people to respect the copyright in its software and as such we must help protect the rights of other copyright holders.

Once sites like YouTube are properly licenced then we can look at this issue again but until then we cannot allow YouTube, etc links where the material is a copyright infringment and these will have to be deleted.

Steinberg have sought legal advice on this and this is the way we have to do it.

Thanks for your understanding.

Re: Steinberg's dongle alternative coming

1. The ability to have the eLicenser on a local network, so that other local computers could be used, without moving the dongle around. This should not be compromising, since I believe that *most* users only own one license per product anyways. And the ones that can afford it, would probably buy additional licenses anyhow, since that would keep their progress from being interrupted in case of network problems.

There might be an external solution available for this task:
http://www.seh-technology.com/products/usb-device-servers/myutn-50a.html

We have had a test run here at work and it worked very well. The USB-eLicenser is available on the network and you can "take it" to be able to work on your system. It is not possible to use the same USB-eLicenser simultaneously on different systems though.
Also note that this is not an official recommendation because we haven't done any official tests so far.

Regarding the USB-eLicenser dicussion in general, I can only say that the USB-eLicenser will be here for some time to come. We are currently discussing a shorter version that would be introduced during next year if everything works as expected and we are also discussing a rather simple way for you to cover short term downtimes due to a USB-eLicenser failure or theft. No details are available yet but we'll let you know!

Re: Cubase 7.5 update or reinstall ?

The Cubase 7.5 update itself is only around 1 GB per platform but the new HALion Sonic SE 2 content adds up to that. The update itself needs a Cubase 7 on the system and you should simply use that to move to 7.5. However, we will also provide the complete ISO image for download as well. That is 7 GB plus the new content (3 GB).

Re: Cubase 7.5 update or reinstall ?

You should only use the ISO if want to install from scratch. There is no reason to let it install into an existing Cubase 7 folder. Regularly installed content will be detected of course.

You can install Cubase 7.5 directly as the essential part will be covered. Additional stuff like videos and external content is not part of the updater but again, it's not essential. If you want everything, go for the ISO image.

Audio issues with late 2013 iMacs and fusion drives

Over the last weeks, we have been contacted by several customers using a late 2013 iMac system with a fusion drive and one of our audio interfaces on Mavericks.
Usually, drop outs not only in Cubase but also on Youtube, iTunes etc. occur

We just received the confirmation from Apple that a fix for this issue - which btw is not limited to our applications and audio interfaces - needs to come from Apple with an update.
Unfortunately, the latest Mavericks 10.9.1 update does not address this. We hope to have a fix or at least more information on this topic in January.

There is an ongoing discussion on the Apple forum on this:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5428602

Here is a description taken from the Apple forum that could be a workaround for the time being. The key is to bypass the flash part of the fusion drive:
>>>
1) Create a bootable OS X external Disk, Boot from that and then install [your audio application] on it.... and use that for [...] any Audio work..for the time being.. until a fix is released by Apple for this issue. Make sure you do not access any data on the FD drive after booting from the external drive otherwise the issue will reappear. until you restart your Mac and reboot from the EXT drive.. You can however, boot from the FD when not doing Audio related work.

2) Split your Fusion drive into an SSD and a Mech drive (again for the time being) and then reassemble the FD after the fix has been issued.

3) Return your iMac for one with an SSD or mech drive inside (if you still can..)

4) Do nothing and wait until Apple releases a fix for the problem... though there is no official ETA for any such fix...

Re: Steinberg - Please fire your website designers

This is why web browsers have this brilliant feature called bookmarks. It's not like every user has the same priorities and interests when browsing our website content and this is why some pages require more than one click.

That's not a good excuse for clunky web design. Most sites have site maps where you can reach every part of it with a single click. You should consider it, but then again you made it abundantly clear that you think your website is blameless and perfect and therefore you don't accept any suggestion. Pity.

Why is everything either black or white these days? Of course, the website has room for improvement - a lot actually - and the guys we decided not to fire are currently working on improvements. Judging the website by taking the separate forum (it's just phpBB) as an example isn't the best choice me thinks ;)

Re: UR44 Issue

The volume is indeed dropped to -3dB when turning on the channel link switch. According to the engineers this is due to the fact that the norminal position of the panpot is different between channel link on and off.

When channel link is on, the norminal position is "turned left or right" position. If you turn to center, volume is decreased from 0dB to -3dB.
When channel link off, it is "center" position. If you turn to left or right, volume is increased from 0dB to +3dB.

If one sets the panpot to left and right before clicking channel link switch, volume will be returned from +3dB to 0dB (norminal level) when channel link is clicked.

BTW, the behavior of the channel link on the MR and UR series is the same as the default settings of YAMAHA digital mixers such as CL, QL and etc...

Re: where is Steinberg?

I'm a little worried?
-Various documentation not being updated

Which one exactly?

-Many new mods doing close to nothing - or handling level 1 knowledge posts

True but this is simply because every support team member here in Hamburg gets moderator status automatically. We have added several new members to the team but our focus still is on emails and phone support. If time permits, we do more than just moderation and first level support here as well.

-Forum buggy

Any examples?

-Old features not being enhanced to match current Cubase or time
-Updates/Fixes coming in at an alarmingly slow rate
-Many *universal* workflow enhancements being ignored
-great ideas not being implemented

We love great ideas but it's always a matter of priorities and even greater ideas that need to be implemented first ;)
These points could start another discussion I'd rather avoid as we have many of these in this forum already. We try our best to make it right for everyone which is not always possible.

maybe i am disillusioned, or not in a musical state of mind atm to notice these things.. idk...
Many times I think that it would take me 1 month at HQ to fix things up and propel the software and the company to where it should be in 2014.
It cant be because of missing money as yamahas net sales last year was something like 366 Billion Yen (over 3 billion$). - So what is it?
Are the original Devs still there? - How many Devs are working on what?
Are you giving up?
Do you need some help from advanced beings?

Thank you for the offer but we are fine and some of the developers from the beginning are still here. Even Charlie Steinberg says hi every now and then. As an independent company under the Yamaha umbrella, we do add to the Yamaha revenue but we still have to work with the money we make ourselves. Without getting into trouble, I can reveal that Steinberg is far from having 3 billion USD available ;)

edit: ech.. whatever.. its not a steinberg only thing... its the same with all civilizations, people, companies and products... sometimes i just freak out knowing that our progression is being slowed down on purpose..
nothing to see here.. move on...

Try to look at the bright side of things in life. Maybe there are actually some good things about us and our software as well. You never know! :)

Re: Handbuch Cubase 7.5

Angeblich Ticket verschwunden

First, if you have a Groove Agent 1 disc - no matter if second hand or not - you can use it to request an update for Groove Agent 4.
Groove Agent 1 does not have to be installed on the new system to run Groove Agent 4.

And yes, we have been busy or better not well staffed over the last week... sorry for that! Most of the team is back though and you should receive answers - at least if you have requested support from the European support team.

Re: In 2014, what is Steinberg's procedure for a lost elicen

We do replace licenses on these conditions:

- The license must not have been replaced before.
- The lost USB-eLicenser must be identified (best option is a registered eLicenser in MySteinberg)
- We must have received a signed statement certifying the loss of the dongle.

We can then disable the USB-eLicenser and provide new activation codes. To keep the downtime short, a spare USB-eLicenser is not a bad idea so that you can download the license(s) as soon as you receive the activation code(s). The turn around time depends on where you live and which support team is handling the case but it is usually very low.

We are also working on a better solution for MySteinberg which will hopefully become effective within this year.

Re: In 2014, what is Steinberg's procedure for a lost elicen

The solution includes a temporary licenses that can be requested in MySteinberg once a USB-eLicenser is lost or defective. This way you can continue working until regular license replacements are issued by support. Of course, this requires a spare USB-eLicenser to make sure you really have a zero downtime.

Not sure how this is related to Cubase 8 or any forum activity though?

Re: Pricing - why so expensive?

The official price for the UK is 82 GBPs. That is the suggested retail price that we as a manufacturer have to set.
The market price always differs from the suggested price. This has been the case with all previous updates or full versions and it is something we cannot change. If the dealer decides to offer products at the purchase price or close to it, then it is his decision.

BTW, the same can be applied to all products out there (well, maybe Apple is an exception here ;) ). Every had a look at the discounts you receive on Amazon or at local retailers on almost all products from Samsung, Philips, Yamaha, even Blu-rays, etc.? No difference to what is discussed here.

We don't exactly like this but as mentioned before, there is not much we can do about it. It's free market economy after all...

That won't work as you would need another Cubase 7 license to apply the upgrade activation code to.

Re: Handbuch Pro 8

Re: Grace Period Frage" Bevorzugung "

http://www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?p=417995#p417995

Solltest Du weiterhin andere User persönlich angehen, dann behalten wir uns weitere Schritte vor. Davon abgesehen hast Du ja selbst schon einen sehr passenden Schluss für Deinen letzten Post gefunden.

Normally, it should be safe to simply apply the update. If something goes wrong, most of the time, it related to the preferences you can bypass or delete using the safe start (pressing Alt+Shift+Ctrl) during Cubase start-up.

Re: Steinberg e-mail support?

Hello all,

I'm posting this here to ask you all what the average time of response is from the Steinberg support team? I emailed them with a question on February 17 and only have gotten the automated response that they receved my email but that if a response might be delayed due to namm and frankfurter musikmesse (which is in itself a quite outdated email... )

I emailed them about a plugin question and sent the same question to Waves who answered in under 5 hours...

This is the very first time I have asked a question to support in the 10+ years that I am a paying customer of Steinberg ... not a good way to treat your customers

Herwig

Hi all,

The message says "We will take care of your request and get back to you as soon as possible. Please note that due to bank holidays and large trade shows (e.g. Musikmesse in Frankfurt and NAMM shows) the response might be delayed." So those two trade shows are only examples.

It is frustrating for the support team and me personally to see that we are not able to respond at least within 48 hours.
The reason for the current backlog has been the Cubase Pro 8 release in combination with many unplanned absences within the team over the last couple of months.
In addition, we had one support agent moving on to Yamaha/Line 6 and two others are currently taking a parental leave.

It is not easy to compensate for this and to find temporary workers or new full time employees that have the product knowledge as well as the needed language skills.
We are currently looking for new full time support agents and recently hired three part time 1st level agents to cope with the backlog.

The above is not supposed to be any kind of excuse, I merely wanted to give an insight into the reasons for this.
I am also very much aware that this is not the first time I write something similar here.
We have to improve the situation to meet your and our own demands and I am really sorry because we do care.

There's nothing on the 8.0.10 download pages - not that I can find anyway.
Scroll down on the download page a bit and you'll see Documentation Zip files in various languages. As previously noted by KMK however, only the english has as of yet been updated.

I find it a pity they no longer put a revision number or date on the credits page. That's where one usually looks first.

You can now find this information in the PDF file properties keywords in your PDF viewer now.
In Foxit it's for instance File -> Properties -> Description -> Keywords

Hallo,

Re: UR22 on iPad

All I can say is that it is not possible to make the UR22 iPad compatible. It is not a marketing decision - why would we want to omit such a feature voluntarily - but a technical limitation. Please keep in mind that the UR22 was the first UR series device all others were introduced later. Unfortunately, it is always an evolution... for instance we introduced pad switches with the UR242 for the first time.

Windows 10 - please do not upgrade!

Hello all,

We will release an official announcement later today but our tests have shown performance and timing issues with Cubase, Nuendo and Sequel on Windows 10 (build 10240) systems.
Also, the latest Quicktime 7.7.7 cannot be installed on a Windows 10 system which basically removes the video support in Cubase and Nuendo.
While these issues did not occur on all systems we tested with, we can only recommend to wait.

In addition, the Yamaha Steinberg USB and Firewire drivers also show issues with sample rate switches and thus are not fully compatible either.

More information will follow as soon as we know more.

Windows 10 - bitte nicht upgraden!

Hallo,

Re: Windows 10 - please do not upgrade! Discussion

Windows 10 is always going to be a 'work in progress'. There will never be a Windows 10 in a locked down, no more updates state. If we accept that, then Steinberg's decision to wait for RTM may be correct, but how do they know that a future update won't 'break' Cubase's functionality in some way? They don't, nor can they know.

I used to work in software management and it isn't easy. For the record, I have gone to Windows 10 and all seems fine, but I can understand why people are cautious. They are good people who are doing their job as best they can.

Indeed, there is no guarantee but at the moment it's very much about rather fundamental issues that need to be addressed and Microsoft contacted us as a result of our statement regarding Windows 10 compatibility. We are working on a solution with Microsoft now and they are really eager to have it working as they put much effort in the audio parts of Windows 10.

Thank you, Ed Doll, for update on what is going on. Could you please describe a bit what the issues looks like, when/if they appear? I updated to win10 and all seems quite ok at first glance. But maybe it is not? How do I know issue is there. I would hate it to make some mixes, only to find out later that some tracks were out of sync for few miliseconds, or some plugins were not processed in mixdown or something like that.
Please, if it is not too much to ask, describe briefly what kind of issues are experienced by users after update, and how can we know if we have same issues present on our system. Thank you.

We discovered a serious issue for Audio/MIDI applications on Windows 10. After some time (a few seconds or a few minutes) audio recording or playback will contain noise (drop outs).
Steinberg Cubase 8 application shows this usually after a few seconds.

During our analysis we discovered the following behaviour of Windows 10:
The Windows MMCSS services will get disabled for any audio application when the user interacts with the computer. As a result the audio processing/streaming threads get suddenly the same importance as non time critical programs. Frequent audio drop outs will start to happen. We observed that moving windows and switching between running applications will result in this issue.

We currently work with Microsoft to investigate and hopefully soon resolve the issue.

Re: Windows 10 - please do not upgrade!

Sorry but why should we do anything like that? With absolutely every operating system update (no matter if it's Mac OS or Windows) we recommend our users to wait until we have been able to test with the final release build. It makes no sense to conduct large scale testings over and over again with every new build. And we are also not the only company to announce compatibility for a new OS some time after its release. For instance, we have to wait for internal Windows 10 updates as well because not all applications we use here for office purposes are fully Win 10 compatible or certified.

And comparing Cubase iC Pro for Android with Cubase and Nuendo is very... let's put it this way... interesting. But I am happy, you learned something today! ;)

Oh a bad sign!!
What we also learned yesterday:
Steinberg will do NOTHING for about a year and then they will discontinue Cubase & Nuendo

just like they did with the Android IC Pro app yesterday, after "trying" nearly a year they were'nt able to make it compatible with Android 5.

And honestly Steinberg Win 10 for testing all this before Release is around for about an year now!

Nikosm, sorry for this! Could you please check whether the latest Quicktime version is installed? An outdated version seems to cause this.
In case you don't use video in Cubase at all, you could also remove the video components from the "Components" folder in the Cubase folder.

Re: Windows 10 - please do not upgrade!

I have to say that it is extremely disappointing that Steinberg has not been doing effective testing for Windows 10 all along. What was Steinberg waiting for? A heads up after almost two weeks of Windows 10 being out is woefully inadequate. The current Windows 10 build has been out for more than a month. All the Steinies are saying "Thanks for the heads up" and other similar verbiage. I am saying "Why did Steinberg fail to have these issues resolved before July 29th?" We are all paying good money for Nuendo 7. It is a disgrace that Steinberg has not been on top of this issue since the Windows 10 builds were made available for the express purpose of testing. And of course why the surprise with Quick Time? I hope that this will be a quick resolution and not drag on for months as in the past.

It's not that easy... let's start with Quicktime. Version 7.7.7 was released not too far prior to the Windows 10 release and this was the first version which could not be installed on Windows 10. 7.7.6 works just fine. And this is actually a very good example. If we had started Windows 10 tests too early we would have announced compatibility only to take it all back last minute because a newer version/build of Windows (or Quicktime) broke everything again.

So what we did was running a large scale test with what we assumed was the released build of Windows 10 and we found issues. Issues our competitors have to face as well. I am not sure why no one else gave a warning that performance issues could come up but it might be related to the fact that we found something they did not find. There is something wrong with realtime audio operations in Windows 10 and Microsoft is working closley together with us to address this. Not because we screwed up but because there is a bug in the system. These things can happen and as with every other major OS upgrade one should wait before deploying it in a professional and productive environment.
Nuendo 7 works fine on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 so what exactly is it that makes Windows 10 a requirement all of a sudden?

BTW other companies like Avid or Sony (for their Vaio computers) also do not support Windows 10 as yet.

I would like to offer a different point of view. I think that waiting, thoroughly testing the release build and not offering immediate compatibility with the latest and greatest operating system just released is more professional than saying "go for it" and cope with the aftermath later.

Please be patient, both MS and Steinberg are working on it.
