Re: Steinberg's dongle alternative coming

It is one thing to say, "Hey Steinberg, the dongle is inconvenient and I would be even more interested in your product if I didn't have to use it." It is even acceptable to say, "I won't buy another product that requires it." This is what the feature request forum is for...

It is another to say, "I can't believe I have to use a dongle! I am the customer and you have to make me happy. I can't live by the terms of the transaction I have already agreed to." This is just whining.

It is so lame to whine about a deal after one has agreed to it.

Never agree to terms that are not acceptable to you. If enough agree, then of course, the vendor will have to make an adjustment. If you give in and buy anyway, then you are just confirming that the terms were reasonable.

Re: Wonderful. C7.0.6 lost my settings, ruining ALL my proje

Could the rescan could be a result of the Daylight Savings Time shift?

In Kontakt, there are three vst plug-in files. You can set a default configuration for each of those files. First, you need to know which one Cubase is actually loading (it sounds like the 8 out version as you stated). In Kontakt, set up the outputs the way you want them and then, in the Outputs section in Kontakt, on the "Presets/Batch Functions" menu select "Save current output section as default for..." and select the vst file version that you are using in Cubase on your projects. Then try to load your Cubase projects again.

HTH.
J.L.

p.s. It may be important and useful to note that the names of the Kontakt plug-in "versions" do not necessarily reflect the actual output configuration. For example, you could set up a 4 output configuration in Kontakt and then save that configuration as the "Kontakt (8 out)" version.

Re: Komplete VSTi (or similar ??)

There are a couple of samplers which have high quality third party libraries.
Kontakt is very popular. The reason why someone probably recommended Komplete is because just buying Kontakt for $400 (unless you get it on sale) doesn't make any sense when you can get Komplete for $500 (which is Kontakt plus several good libraries plus a BUNCH of other very good stuff). Kontakt, Reaktor, and Guitar Rig alone would be worth it... The rest is bonus.
You could even use the free Kontakt Player with some libraries but I think you will find it limiting.
Two others, which I have never used, are the East West Quantum Leap and Vienna Pro. I don't know much about them but they seem highly regarded to me.

Re: Komplete VSTi (or similar ??)

I am no expert... But I would say that Kontakt by itself (which does include orchestral and jazz instruments), or even Komplete (which gives you some more libraries for Kontakt) is PROBABLY not worthy of being called a fully professional jazz and orchestral package. Maybe in the intermediate range (there are a good range of articulations and adjustable parameters, options, etc.)

What you DO get with Kontakt is a great choice of professional third party libraries (which will cost more).

I do hope that someone who is familiar with East West as well would offer some opinion/advice.

Re: Komplete VSTi (or similar ??)

So am i correct in that you can buy Komplete and then ADD extra NI Libraries to it later down the line ??
If you buy Komplete, you can add libraries to it later (both NI and third party). If you buy Komplete Ultimate, you will get the ENTIRE line of NI libraries for Kontakt AND Reaktor. Of course, the third party stuff is all separate, which is probably where the HIGHEST quality libraries are.

I notice you have HALion Sonic. The Kontakt libraries are similar to Dark Planet, Hyptonic Dance, Triebwerk, etc., in that they are "expansions" to the basic instrument that can be added at any time.

Re: this'll change everything 14 nov

I agree that some are missing the point. It is not about the quality of the sound. It is about replacing an IDEA (sketched out in MIDI) with an actual recording by an artist FROM A REMOTE LOCATION.
That performer does not even need to own Cubase (I think). All they need (I think) is the free "performer" application. They hear your basic song and then add a living breathing performance.
I think the latency over the internet is only a concern if you were trying to record from two different locations at once. If you are only recording at one location, you could be 30 seconds late at the mixing desk because all you are doing is recording the performance and replacing your MIDI track with it. So you turn your MIDI idea into a song with real instrument recordings one performer at a time from multiple locations. Not unlike simply sending them your project and letting them replace the MIDI and then send it back, but they don't need Cubase at all.

Anyway, I do think it is a good idea for collaborations. If all the collaborating performers use Cubase then it doesn't do too much other than save the hassle of sending the projects back and forth. Probably not something I would use, personally.

Lastly, I will agree that the video it quite funny. The tones of their voices and interaction reminds me of two ladies on a PBS talk show about flowers or pastries. Remember the NPR Delicious Dish skits on SNL with Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon? It does a fair job of describing what VST Connect is designed to do, however.

Yes. If you buy Komplete, you will get everything you would get if you bought Kontakt (i.e. the all the factory content) PLUS several more add-on libraries (pianos, Vintage Organs, MM Bass, Retro Machines, Studio Drummer, and others).

Re: Audio keeps breaking up / error messages

I used to have a Fast Track Pro (2010-2012 ish). It would sometimes just stop and I would have to reset the audio. At lower latencies it happened more often (probably related to the data stream being interrupted).
Then, they came out with a 64 bit driver and several betas, which all seemed to be worse. There were about three betas within a couple of months, none of which really seemed to work any better than the last. Then, the Fast Track Pro was "sold" to AVID (vice m-audio). Shortly after that, being fed up and not seeing any more driver updates, I bought a Saffire 2i2 and have been very happy with it.
My opinion.... The Fast Track Pro was a USB 1.1 and 32 bit when it was conceived. I think it may one of those cases where it "works" on the newer 64 bit systems with USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 but just doesn't work well. Add to that the fact that they don't want to spend much money to make it work well (via driver/firmware updates).
I am not saying there isn't a solution to your issue but just thought I would share my experience.
I hope this information is helpful.

Re: Komplete VSTi (or similar ??)

NATIVE is (and will always be) the way forward and so is something i will always use now and in the future.
Basically, I agree with this. It is a great toolbox of stuff. I don't know what will happen in the future, but I believe the Komplete (particularly Kontakt, Guitar Rig, and Reaktor) will continue to be popular and well supported for a while.
i have learned that i lot of the 3rd Party VSTi's i am very interested in require the FULL (not the FREE) version of Kontakt 5 to be able to play them. In other words, if i can only use 3rd Party VSTi's which utilise the FREE Kontakt player then i will be limited in my choice of plug-ins.
Yes. Think of the Kontakt Player (the free version) like HALion Sonic SE. It will play the library but the editing capabilities are very limited or non-existent. The paid Kontakt is like HALion in that you can fully edit the instrument. They LOOK the same in the GUI but one allows more editing of the instruments.

Re: Cubase Artist 6/7 Comparison (help?)

But obviously you need Artist 6 in the first place to upgrade (otherwise you would have to buy Artist 7 from scratch).
Paul
Actually, the only thing you need in order to upgrade is the LICENSE. You don't even need to have Cubase 6 installed during the upgrade. Your Cubase 6 license will be replaced with a C7 license (which will run prior versions of Cubase). But the programs themselves are basicallly untouched and irrelevant in the upgrade process.

Re: Duplicate midi note when resizing or moving

By default, holding down ALT while dragging a note will create a copy.
I have never heard of a copy happening when resizing, which leads me to believe the following...
Perhaps there are two duplicate notes in the MIDI part to begin with. When you move one the other is exposed giving the appearance of a duplicate.
This can happen if your keyboard controller is sending MIDI on multiple ports and you have "All MIDI Inputs" selected for the track.
A quick test...
If you move a note, and then move it again, is it still "duplicated"

Re: Rerecord mode!

Re-record mode

We all know the situation: you hit the record button, grab the guitar or start singing and after the first note you know already that you can do it better; you want to repeat the take immediately. To speed up this task, simply hit the record button again and the recording will start from the original position preserving the original pre-count and metronome settings. A handy, time-saving new feature that’s as simple as it is useful.

There is but one way to achieve this. Go into politics. Work to have a law passed, that stipulates that software manufactures are financially responsible for any losses that are the result of their software not working properly.

Then you'll see software as rock solid as the pyramids. ;)

Go to the online shop and buy Cubase there. Then it will give you an activation code.
Unfortunately, you may not be able to buy a download version. Many updates or upgrades are available as downloads but an original version may only be available in the box (it may come with several DVDs). In that case you will have to wait for the box to arrive because the activation code will be in the box. Sort of an educated guess here but...
The BSOD indicates, usually, something at the device or driver level. I suspect the sound card.
Are you using a USB audio interface? If so, it could be that after the extended down time, the USB ports are powered down to save energy. The driver would lose communication with the device and become unstable. There are some power settings that prevent the USB ports from ever "sleeping"

HSO won't show up in your VSTi rack because it is not a standalone instrument. It is only a library that shows up in HALion, HALion Sonic, or HALion Sonic SE.
In the VSTi rack, select one of those and then look for the HSO library within those instruments.

If not, it may be a problem because how is Steinberg ever to know that the software originally belonged to you? Since you have a UR22, which I assume came with the Cubase version, maybe support can help you since they can see that you own the UR22.

Re: Read/Write not working on wheels?

Are you trying to write CC Data by moving the MOD wheel on the HALion Sonic GUI with your mouse?
If so, that won't work because HS does not send the MIDI data back to Cubase. You need to add a MIDI track, write data to CC1 (modulation) on that MIDI track and then direct it to HS. If you are using a MIDI controller/keyboard, make sure it is the input of the MIDI track and that the output of that MIDI track goes to HS.

Re: Programs in HSSE reseting with every play cycle

Maybe the MIDI track is sending program changes to the instrument. You could try to remove them or filter them out. I Have never used them and can't give much detail but check the MIDI track at the bottom where the controller lanes are. Select the "Program Change" lane and see if there is data there.

Just looked at HALion Sonic. On the Options page, there is a Global "Program Chage" setting. Maybe you have in on General MIDI? Try putting it to "Off".

Re: FX channel tracks can't route to groups!

You have sends on Group 1 and Group 2 that go back to FX 1 and FX2. Cubase will not allow feedback loops like this. Select "No Bus" for those Sends on Group 1 and Group 2 and then it will allow you to select Group 1 and Group 2 as destinations for the FX Tracks.

p.s. I know the Sends were not "Activated" but I guess Cubase still considers it "connected" and will not allow it.

Thanks.
Try DELETING the preferences file. It may be corrupted. See the knowledge base.
You can also temporarily drag it to the desktop just to see if that helps. That way, if it doesn't, at least you haven't lost all your preferences for no reason.

Well, you have found something that is certainly not available in the other Zone!
Personally, I don't know how you could do what you describe.

Re: Modulation Matrix Question

It is an interesting question and I did not know the answer either so I decided to try it. ;)
I tried to send the LFO of Zone 1 to Bus 1 and then, in Zone 2, I assigned Bus 1 to the Level.

It did not work... :(
It appears that the modulation signals are only available within the zone. But, what parameter are you trying to use as a source that is NOT available in the other zone? For example, if you have an envelope or LFO in Zone 1 that you want to use in Zone 1 AND Zone 2, you can just duplicate the LFO or envelope in Both Zones (Or just select the layer and create the LFO/envelope there and it will duplicate the settings in both zones for you).
I am just trying to establish a use case to see if there is a way to do it.

Re: Real-time peak & Average load too high with 3 VSTi

VST instruments really do use a lot of processing power. HALion 5 (and HALion Sonic 2, HSSE2), NI Razor are high CPU users especially when using synthesis. Sample players seem to do better because they just have to play the sound. Try freezing those instruments and see what happens. I have found that while I can have many audio tracks (or frozen VSTi tracks) I can only have a few VSTi tracks, depending on the type, before my performance starts to peak.

Re: MIDI Track Pitch Bend

I really like your second idea. The way the HALion instruments have been so deeply integrated with Cubase seems like it wouldn't be hard to have the instrument report to Cubase the range of pitch change.
But, EVEN if the information doesn't come from the instrument, it would be really great if the user could at least define the graduations in the controller lane (i.e. +4 half steps and -12 half steps) and allow snapping to those values.

As far as the first idea, I almost feel like if the second idea were done properly, you wouldn't need the first feature.

Re: MIDI notes recorded earlier than they sound

I don't have C7 myself but I have read several reports that there is a new control on the track which allows you to enable/disable some extra delay compensation for the track.

I have read that it works, but I have not experienced this first hand.
I am using the C7.5.1 Trial and I can report that I was recording some MIDI playing and, even with the latency set pretty high, it still recorded the notes pretty accurately (within human error, IMO). On Cubase 6.5, I used to have to set the latency much lower to get an accurate MIDI recording.

Re: What a version I want?

CD is Cubase LE6but The icon when finish install show " Cubase LE AI Elements 6 64bit"
OK. So it appears you have Cubase LE6. Just to be sure, open the E-Licenser Control Center and see what your license says. It should also say Cubase LE6.
If you can confirm that, then you should buy the upgrade from Cubase LE 6 to Cubase Elements 7

Thanks!

I had ASIO Guard on. But, I believe ASIO guard does not touch tracks with the moniitor on (i.e. it considers them as having a real time input source).

Re: Automation Value request

You can enter the value you want in the info line, at the top (must be turned on).
The window in the Track Controls is the CURRENT value (based on the cursor position).
I was never sure why it allows you to double click in it as I always thought of it as a "display only" value. If you notice, I believe it will even display a value where there is no node (for example during a "ramp" between two nodes).

No. Elements uses a software license (on the hard drive). You have the option to permanently transfer the license to a USB eLicenser, but it is certainly not required.

I can't remember if the HALion 5 installer includes the HS2 content but if you just install both, you will be sure to have all the content. ;) If you don't want the HS2 Instrument, you can uninstall it independently from the content.

Re: Midi Editor (Controller Display) Newbie

It is important to understand that a VST instrument and specific program (or patch) must be programmed to respond to certain MIDI CC data. Which instrument and program are you using? Also, for example, in HALion Symphonic Orchestra, if I remember correctly, the "expression" (or volume) can be assigned to different CC data such as CC1 (Modulation), CC11 (Expression). Another possibility is that some instruments, on the channel or program slot level can filter out or ignore CC data like CC7 because you may choose to change the volume by automating CC7 going into the instrument or by automating the channel audio output of the instrument.

Re: "Downgrade" from Halion 4 (Edu) to Halion Sonic 2?

I agree with Roel about upgrading to H5 and using HS2. I don't believe Steinberg would offer a "Downgrade" price and, even if they did, I don't believe I would pay any price, other than zero, to get HS2 when, for $99, I could get H5 and work wih HS2.

Re: What do I get if I purcase Absolute? (Halion)

Absolute (the version for Cubase owners) is advertised with a permanent license to the trial version of HALion Sonic SE included in Cubase, so it has something to do with it.
I believe it says that it includes a permanent license to the trial version of HALion Sonic included in Cubase (which is separate from HALion Sonic SE). HALion Sonic SE is a light version of HALion Sonic that only works within Cubase and is included in Cubase. With a Cubase license, you ALREADY have a full license for HALion Sonic SE.

HALion does come in a VST 2.x version but you need to make sure you are USING that version in the host. Make sure you have installed the 2.x version and that you are pointing Bitwig to that version AND ONLY that version.

Re: How to record the chords under the pads

HALion/HALion Sonic does not send the MIDI from the onscreen GUI back to Cubase to be recorded. That means that you can not record by clicking on the keyboard or pads in the GUI.
The easiest way to record the Trigger Pads would be to assign keys to the Trigger Pads (I have mine assigned to the eight highest notes on the keyboard). Then, once the notes are assigned, play the notes on your MIDI controller keyboard. Of course, have the controller routed to a MIDI track to the instrument or use an instrument track.

Re: sound quality of Sonic SE

I wonder if the OP is referring to the DETAIL of the instruments? For example, a guitar sound on HSSE does not, of course, sound "good" to me because the level of detail is not there. I am referring to the number of different articulations, tones, etc. In other words, they don't sound REAL. Like a drum roll that sounds like a "machine gun" effect because the instrument is not using several different samples in random order, etc.
If that is what the OP is referring to then I would say it is just a result of HSSE being an entry level instrument that covers a broad spectrum of instruments and doesn't focus on one with extra detail.
If you want a high level of detail on, say, a guitar, bass, or strings, it may be necessary to buy a Kontakt instrument that focuses on a high level of detail.

If we are just talking about the SONIC quality of HSSE (i.e. the sound engine), personally, I think it sounds pretty good.
