I can not hear VST effects on speakers.

I use Cubase 5 .I can record VST effects but I can not hear them as real time on speakers.I mean while playing guitar when I pluged in VST (for example “distortion”) I can not hear distorted sound as real time on speakers but I can record distorted sound.
