Cubase 7 hang on exit

Postby smapmap » Mon Sep 23, 2013 11:45 am

I had my first experience with the 'hang on exit' issue in Cubase.

I removed dxishell from my system and it is back to normal. Not sure why this suddenly became an issue but thought I'd share in case it helps anyone with similar issues.

Thanks for the update. Were you on 7.0.6.?
Wrappers are not supported, but sometimes work. I'd suggest checking with the dxishell people to see if they know the issue.

I am on 7.0.6 Chris. Not sure if this is related to the upgrade or not. dxishell was fine before AFAIK.

I think you'll find the problem is random and sporadic and nothing to do with dxishell. You might not get another one for weeks or months or you might get one tomorrow. Why this occurs with some users I have no idea, but I've had it for years through several updates.

Also, the hang isn't a freeze or a crash. If you wait for several minutes Cubase will eventually close.

Bizarre. Its only just started happening with me and I'm not aware of anything else changing other than the 7.0.6 update.

I'll keep my eye on it and post back if it happens again.

p.s. before I removed dxishell I had left it running for 30mins and still hadn't closed down! :? Task mgr was my friend!

Postby tatsava » Tue Sep 24, 2013 12:14 pm

hi, this worked for me and might work for others

my cubase 7 artist had to be closed by task manager a few months after i got it about 90% times

because of some other windows problems i ended up uninstalling windows media player and widgets, after i did that the next time i worked with cubase it closed smooth and fast as it should...

it was luck but it fixed my problem with hang on exit...

windows widgets seem to be a big source of problems and i didnt use them anyway but i did end up reinstaling WMP so i think windows widgets were somehow the problem in this situation...

hope that helps some of you.... :)

I used to get the hangs on exit with early versions of 6.0 but I haven't experienced it since through 6.5 up until 7.0.6. It must be something else related to your system.

Thanks for the replies folks. As hedshaker suspected this has actually not solved my problem. Still seeing the issue even on an empty template. I'll follow up on some of the suggestions tonight and report back.

That is 100% correct.

This has been happening since v4, BTW.

OK - I disabled windows media player. After a few evenings I've not had any issues. :D

No idea why but the recommendation seems to have worked so far! :ugeek:

This happens to me 100% of the time on Cubase 7.06 on OS X 10.8. No idea how to fix it. It happens even with a totally empty project.

No. I cant confirm that this happens on a Mac, but according to reports, it does happen on both.

I can live with a few exit hangs I guess, but the annoying thing is that it doesn't update the recent projects list when you have to kill the Cb process!! Happening for years, still happens to me occasionally and usually to do with older 32bit plugins I'm thinking.

On Mac, I would recommend clearing your Preferences:

First, please shut down Cubase. Then please go to Mac Hard Drive, Users, your user name, Library, Preferences. Trash all of the Cubase or Nuendo folders that you see inside of the Preferences folder. This will trash your key commands, preferences, sound card settings, etc. It also should clear up the problem you are having. Restart Cubase. You will need to reset your audio outputs (Devices, Device Setup, VST Audio System).

You're not using Novation Automap, or once had it installed on your DAW, by chance? Automap made Cubase hang on exit for me last year.

Sorry, here's the PC version:

First, please shut down Cubase. Then go to the Start menu, All Programs, Cubase 7, Cubase 7 User Settings Folder. In the top address bar, you should see “App Data (roaming) Steinberg” Click on Steinberg at the top. This will put you in the Steinberg app data folder. Trash any Cubase or Nuendo folder that you see here. This will trash your key commands, preferences, sound card settings, etc. It also should clear up the problem you are having. Restart Cubase. You will need to reset your audio outputs (Devices, Device Setup, VST Audio System).

do any of you guys run an m-audio midi interface btw? this is pure speculation, but actually shared by some other folks as well-- it seems i get much less hangs on exit when my m-audio keyboard isn't connected (which, i am aware, is by no means a solution).

any other theories? this is like spotting the ufos.

Personally, I do not have an M-Audio interface, nor did I ever have Automap installed.

Here, the issue is dongle related. I have two other users who - on different systems - can attest to the fact the issue is dongle related on their end as well. Which means it's not me nor my system. And I am willing to bet the farm that, although it may not seem like it - everyone else's issue is dongle related as well.

Cheers.

That the answer for every problem in our days , it doesn't matter that we have painstakingly put our preferences together we just "trash them" .
I suffered big time with hanging on exit with 6.5 but after swapping from HD to SSD for some strange reason it disappeared and now even with automap it's running very sweet ;)
If Trash all you hardwork" is Steinbergs get out of jail card then my money is staying in the bank from now on because it's getting to risky to update and if your using the "trash all your hard work " all the time then that tells me that you really don't have a clue what the problem is and that is very scary . No C8 for me until this "Trash all your hardwork " has been completely removed from the Steinberg trouble shooting dictionary .

I understand your concerns about clearing Application Data/Preferences, as a tech I have to trash mine regularly for testing. That said, I suggest it in this case because it is the most likely adjustment that can be made to the software that will improve hanging. I agree that MIDI and audio interfaces, along with third party plugins, can cause this as well. I am very glad that switching to an SSD drive helped with your issue, but many of our customers would prefer to rebuild their user settings before making a purchase like this.

One other tip that I do, I have a master project where I save all of my plugins to individual tracks with my custom presets saved in them. If I have to trash my Prefs, reinstall my OS, switch to a new computer, or just work on a friend's machine, I've got a quick way to move my presets. I open the Master project, save the desired plugins with their preset names and now they are in that system. I'm not saying by any means it's the most elegant way, but it works for me.

I hope this information is helpful.
