[Mac Issue] Remove Insert Effect

Postby Steve Helstrip » Wed Nov 20, 2013 12:49 pm

This is a small one, but irritating nonetheless.

Every time I remove an insert effect by dragging it from its slot, I get this dialogue. The 'please don't ask again' tick box is not remembered since I get asked this question at least 10 times per day!!!

Hi Steve,

I just tried it and it worked for me. Maybe you want to repair your disk permissions?

Hi Luis, I think Apple Disk Utility Repair Permissions would not do anything here; that utility affects Apple-installed software, and not 3rd party software, even when if it uses the Apple installer. This function is widely misinterpreted.

Here's an excellent in-depth article that talks discusses what that utility does. http://www.macworld.com/article/1052220 ... sions.html

As to Steve's report, I also can't reproduce in 7.0.6, is that what you're on?

And what happens when you load another project? Does the dialogue box return? It does on my system. Every time.

that utility affects Apple-installed software, and not 3rd party software, even when if it uses the Apple installer.

Not really true. A quote from the article:
only those files installed using OS X’s Installer utility and whose installation packages leave behind a proper receipt in /Library/Receipts are affected by the Repair Disk Permissions function.

Repair Disk Permissions takes a look at the Receipts folder for the docs that any properly constructed installer made with a Distribution resource file.

Those receipt files contain the installation tree and file permission settings for every file in the installation. This is what Repair Disk Permissions looks at to compare and reset.

Really. Open Library/Receipts and see if it's only Apple installations.

Nitpicking aside....I find it hard to believe that running the repair app would solve this issue....but if it does....great. It'll only take a few minutes to find out.

What I understood from the article was that 3rd party software is included if it's a part of an apple install, as in some printer drivers. Cubase uses the apple installer, but doesn't leave receipts.

Repair disk permissions has long been useful in Cubase.

OP, I'd trash Prefs.

Cubase uses the apple installer, but doesn't leave receipts.

That's because you're looking in the wrong place. Open the Receipts folder and look for a file called "InstallHistory.plist".
Steinberg'a installers left individual receipts up to Cubase 6. From C6 on, the data has been stored in the InstallHistory.plist.
Open that with a text editor and do a text find for "Cubase 7". You'll find the data that Repair Permissions will lock on to.

(Along with every C6 to C6.5 upgrade you ever installed)

Hi guys,

let's not go off topic here. If you want to talk about disk permissions, maybe you could start a new topic in the Steinberg Lounge. Let's focus here on the OP's problem.

@ Steve: It doesn't happen when opening another project, not here at least. It does happen when restarting Cubase though (again, on my system).

I'll give it a closer look and report back.
