But, seeing as how there don't seem to be any reports of similar issues with Steinberg competitors' other 64-bit score apps for Mac, I really hope that the problem is being dealt with, which, I fear, might involve a serious low-level rewrite.. which was why Cubase 6.5 64-bit Mac has no score printing (you say you simply load your Project into Cubase 6.5, but I presume you were using it in 32-bit mode (which still used the old Carbon code).

Can't overwrite when score printing to PDF

Postby Keezix » Fri May 10, 2013 11:30 pm

When attempting to print a PDF from the score editor in version 7, and a file of the same name already exists, the standard dialog comes up:
xx.pdf" already exists. Do you want to replace it?
The standard buttons appear, "cancel" or "replace". Problem is neither buttons work. Neither does pressing "return" on keyboard. Only choice of action is to force-quit Cubase, meaning printing not accomplished. Also, there used to be a dialog box indicating printing progress. Now there is nothing. Not really a problem, unless like in my case you are printing a 41 page orchestra score.

1. Open an already prepared layout in the score editor, for which you already have a PDF printout.
2. Select "print" from "file" menu (Mac)
3. The "Print" Dialog box appears as expected. Select "Print to PDF". The "Save as" dialog box appears.
4. Input exact same name as existing PDF printout and also select the exact same location for saving it, such that the standard replacement dialog box appears (as outlined above).
5. Attempt to click on "replace" or "cancel", or press return key (Mac).
6. Result: nothing happens! Force-quit is only option.

Versions before Cubase 7 don't have this problem. Probably not applicable on PC, only Mac

I see that Sibelius is 64 bit and there is no problem printing to PDF in that software...it can be done!

The fact of SB being silent doesn't mean they won't fix this. (doesn't mean they will either ;) ) They won't say anything though if they haven't put a fix into the production pipeline. read viewtopic.php?f=175&t=39277&start=50#p252174 for an informative post about that. Also, they will give higher priority to problems that have no workarounds (like printing in older versions etc.)

It's true that Score gets less attention than the other parts of the program, but this has gotten better of late.

Also, tech support people are only allowed to give generic canned responses, which are pretty vague. (and dissatisfying)

Did you try my workaround? It will at least let you stay in C7 and not have to reformat your parts.

Steve, many of my scores are a lot of pages. It would take me too long to do it page by page. It is quicker for me to jump into 6.5 and print to PDF from there. The formatting stays in the file but in 6.5 you just have to run it again, but it goes to what you have already prepared in 7.03, so it doesn't take very long. Once you save in 6.5 it stays put in its format. I'll just have to get used to printing to PDF this way. I send my copyists an XML file (which does export from 7.03 just fine) which they import into Finale and I send the PDF for reference. The beauty of the smaller size files is ease of sending via e-mail.

I'll live with it, maybe they will fix it on one of these upgrades, as you so wisely say, we score guys are not important to them. Maybe I'll get someone to demo Sibelius for me.

Oh, that sounds quite workable. Did you see that the ex-Production head and team from Sibelius in now working for Steinberg? http://blog.steinberg.net/

They are starting a scoring app from scratch, and they are not working on Cubase at all. I had a short email exchange with him, the timeline is a couple years, they will bring some of what they do into Cubase also.

Yeah, the forum search is pretty poor generally. I use google with site:steinberg.net in the search term.

Printing score to PDF and retaining settings

Postby leeholdridge » Fri Jun 14, 2013 6:25 pm

Still deeply concerned that Steinberg has not resolved the issue with being able to print a score to PDF in a reasonably sized file and that Cubase will not retain the formatted score settings properly once saved. I am told it is because of the 64 bit Mac software, however it has been brought to my attention that both Finale and Sibelius have solved these problems...where is Cubase in all of this?

I'll give this a bump for you Lee - not a concern for myself as I don't use Score; but I know you folk that do have been 'passed over' shall we say in the updates/attention stakes of late.. ;)

Fix still not done in 7.0.5 - two issues that were merged in this thread:

Mac Cubase becomes unresponsive when saving from the print dialog when saving with duplicate name.
Details: http://www.steinberg.net/forum/posting. ... 6#pr212385

Print to PDF creates large files, +or- 20 times normal size.

Re: Mac 7.0.1: unresponsive when saving from print dialog

SteveInChicago wrote:This post was merged into another post about Score printing. I thought I would post it separately.

Can someone dupicate?

Mac Cubase 7.0.1 becomes unresponsive when saving from the print dialog when saving with duplicate name.

repro:

Remove Cubase 7 from ~/Library/Preferences/ (to eliminate any other issue)
Create a new file in Cubase (I created an empty file)
Add a MIDI track
Open it in Score Edit
Switch to page view mode
Print the score to pdf. Use a file name that already exists when the save dialog comes up
Hit Save

Cubase is now unresponsive. You cannot use the mouse or keyboard to click on Cancel or Replace, to dismiss the save dialog.

The only way out is to force quit.

I have just run into this exact problem today.

Seriously, is this true? This would be great! Also it would be great that once formatted for page size that it retains the format. Usually when you come back later and reload it defaults to letter size which is useless.

Where is the quote from?

This is flat out NOT TRUE! I also saw this claim in the "Version history- known issues" that comes with the newest version.

I updated to 7.0.6 and when I print to PDF and already have a file with the same name, as reported a zillion times earlier, Cubase becomes unresponsive! This is exactly the same horrible behavior as in previous versions after 7, which causes potential loss of work and time. I would really like to know what in the world Steinberg is claiming with this statement!

I can confirm the size and unresponsiveness bugs as well, they're still alive and kickin with Cubase 7.0.6.

Plus, I'd like to add another issue: PDF files of scores look quite blurry in Mac's Preview reader. Scores from other programs do not. See sample pics in this thread.

Solved in the new Cubase 7.5, is the problem I and others reported in previous versions of Cubase 7, of attempting to overwrite an existing PDF file while printing to PDF within the score editor causing the app to become unresponsive! It works fine now! Thank you Steinberg. I can now get on with my work. :D
