Re: Recommended laptop models

Postby grpetz » Thu Jan 10, 2013 2:35 am

I am using a ASUS G74 with the Intel Core I-7, two internal 500g 7200 rpm drives and 16gb of ram. Our live sets use about 5-6gb of VST loaded instruments. I am very pleased with the G74 for its ability to handle a large load, although it is a very heavy laptop, but the processing power was more important to me. We record about 4 stereo tracks and 2 mono tracks, plus I use Mobius looper. We use Cubase 7 and a Steinberg UR824. I do record to an external hard drive and the extra internal one is used for the VST instrument sounds. Gary

Two of us (posts on page 2 of this thread) are very happy with the HP 8460p. It's very powerful and with the Expresscard slot you canadd a TI chipset firewire card or other peripheral.
Comp1: Windows 7 64bit, Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R, Intel I7 970, 12 gig Patriot DDR3 ram, RME Digiface, Steinberg MR816x, Geoforce 66000 PCIe, , Cubase 8 64bit
Comp 2:Windows 7 64bit,Celeron G540,16 gb ram, VEPro.

1. Hewlett Packard (HP)
2. EliteBook 8770w (17")
3. Win 7 Pro x64
4. Quad-core i7 3820QM @ 2.70 Ghz (3.70 Ghz max OC)
5. 16 GB (32 max)
6. 256 GB SSD + 1 TB 7200 rpm (both internal)
7. RME Babyface
8. Cubase 7/Cakewalk Sonar X2
9. Soundtracks (portable rig)

Flawless performance. This is one monster of a laptop, the best I've ever used. The 17" 1080p display (1920x1080) is just about the best screen you can desire on a laptop. Perfect combination of large size and high resolution (a friend of mine has a Surface Pro and 1920x1080 on a 10" screen is simply ridiculous. You'd need a magnifier to see anything!)

Even tried hooking it up to my studio's RME UFX via Firewire and it works perfectly (which means it's OK to use with FW interfaces, unlike many other PC laptops.)
Desktop: i7 3770k, 32 GB RAM, nVidia GTX770 + GT640-DCSL fanless, 3 monitors (30" 2560x1600 + 2x 27" 1920x1080), 256 GB SSD (OS), 2 TB SATA III (audio), 3 TB SATA III (sample libraries), 3x 3 TB USB 3.0 (backup/archives), RME UFX, Win 8.1 Pro x64, Cubase 7.5, Sonar X3, Vienna Ensemble Pro 5.

Slaves: 2x i7 2700k, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, 3 TB SATA III, Win 8.1 Pro x64, Vienna Ensemble Pro 5.

Laptop: 17" HP EliteBook 8770w (i7 3820QM 2.7 Ghz/3.7 Ghz max OC, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, 1 TB SATA III), RME Babyface, Win 7 Pro x64, Vienna Ensemble Pro 5, Cubase 7.5, Sonar X3.

I need a new pc laptop for Cubase together
With tc konnekt 24dI have read this thread
and have decided to buy a Hp elitebook 15,6 and
add a Ti firewirecard.

I am choosing between the 8560w or the 8570w.
Anyone who has this laptop and can give a review?
Are they stable with cubase ?
Known issues?
Differences between this two?

Thanks
Thomas

I've heard only good things about Lenovo notebooks and Cubase.
I don't use a notebook for Cubase but I do use Lenovo and can testify that I have no problems.
If they're good enough for NASA and used on the ISS ...

Mackie Onyx 1620i - Steinberg Midex 8 - Steinberg CC121.

Sounds like a very great Laptop for real work just checking specifications you gave. ;)
I agree, bigger screen is essential and minimum 1920 X 1080 HD resolution. 10" screen is simply ridiculous for anything.
What's next, 4k, 10" screen. LOL

Postby Helge Nilsen » Sun Mar 09, 2014 5:35 pm

I have ended up with the following Asus laptop: ASUS K95VB 18,4"
Spec:
Intel® Core™ i7 3630QM -prosessor / 2.4 GHz ( Max. boost 3,4 GHz ) - Intel® HM76 Chipset
RAM: 8GB ( 2 tracs x 4 ) with DDR3 1600 MHz SDRAM, 4 tracks total. ( 2 tracks free ! ...possible expand to 16 GB ?? or ?? )
Windows 8 .1
Screen: 18,4" 4:3 Full HD (1920x1080)
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 740M 2GB DDR3 VRAM
Harddisk / Store : 3.5" SATA : 3TB 7200 RPM installed.
( ...On 2.5" SATA empty : I’m to get install the following : SAMSUNG SSD 120GB here...or 250 ???? )
Optical device: Blu-ray-Rom
Cardreader: 3 -i-1 ( SD/ SDHC/ SDXC)
Camera : HD webcamera
Network : 802.11 b/g/n - Bluetooth™ V4.0 - 10/100/1000 Base T
Connections :
1 x Microfone in-contact
41 x Headphone out-contact
2 x USB 3.0
2 x USB 2.0
1 x RJ45 LAN-contact for cable network
1 x HDMI
Sound:Integrated speakers and microphone - ASUS SonicMaster Lite-teknologi - Altec Lansing® Speakers
Battery: 6cells 4700 mAh
Weight:4.1 kg

..My comment : It is not a new Laptop model but I chosed it because of the screen and the low noise level that I have read about this machine ?? The CPU is 3.gen. i7 Yvy Bridge ? (I was nearly buying an ASUS N56JR ( with : i7-4700QM / Intel® HM86 Chipset - NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 760M - 4 off USB3 ) for the same price but beause of the noise level ?? and screen size I chosed this older model K95 to use primarly for recording and the UR824. ) Hope that it is capable of handling cubase 7.5 and some upgradings after that ? ...possible increase the RAM to 16 GB ?

Nice if somebody with experience wIth UR824 Cubase 7.0 /7.5 could reply on these issues ? The laptop is not in store before end of March, so changes might be possible ?? :?:

I've done a few 24 track live recordings using my UR824 and my HP elitebook and they've been faultless :D

You should be fine, USB has really sorted out a lot of PC laptop audio headaches.

Hello everyone.

Soon I'm going to buy a new tablet / laptop.
I will serve primarily as a tablet for office work, but from time to time I will also need a computer for Cubase to record 8 or 10 audio tracks with additional paths with a few HALion VST plugins.
My current laptop core2 duo 2.1ghz barely knead 4 or 5 audio tracks ... :)

For large Cubase project I have a new desktop, so I need more mobile tablet with windows, which I could also, as far as comfortably work with Cubase.

I wonder at the MS Surface 3 pro i5, 25ssd and 8gb ram, or Lenovo Yoga 2 pro, or pro Yoga 3.

I saw that the Surface 3 pro copes well even with larger projects Cubase.
Yoga 2 should also be checked.
Yoga 3 has a less powerful processor so would need an opinion about it ....

I also saw that the Dell XPS 12 is ok ....

Or maybe you could offer some other similar converted laptop / tablet with similar characteristics and similar performance.

I do not want to buy two devices - a tablet and laptop.
I also depends on the small size and light weight device as a tablet.

But on the other hand ...

All of these devices are quite expensive.
I do not know if I need to invest so much money if this device will not be the main tool for the job, but only occasionally.

Thank you for your opinions and advice.

Yours sincerely.
