Steinberg's dongle alternative coming

I have no problem with the dongle, but it would be nice to have the choice of maybe purchasing a much more “durable” dongle. Like something made out of brushed aluminum, or something similar.

Dongles?
I need more Dongles!!
I LOVE colorful Dongles!!!
Very nice on christmas trees (tip!)

lol :sunglasses:

Aren’t dongles those macabre trophys the Predator used to hang about?

Agree - they came to the realization it was bad for sales - period.

This is my point in all these DONGLE discussions - it’s supposed to protect or encourage the monetary investment for the developer… well what if no-one is buying in any case??

The market dictates - simple - if more users are on laptops than 5 years ago - change the policy/technology to keep trend or simply watch the business fade away

Let’s ask this - why do you have no problem? What do you believe are the benefits for you?

I look forward to there being no dongle… and then for all the posts screaming for it to be brought back.
When you can’t remember all those numbers and passwords. When you’re out recording on your lappy with “clients”. (clients was an old English newspaper term for men who visited houses of ill repute)

Have you all actually thought about the alternative?
If you have to go out with your DAW (outDAWs I suppose) there are cases (that also double as a computer desk/rest) where things like dongles on extenders can be stashed out of sight.
After all Steinberg are doing so much for us I’m starting to think of them as a nanny company.

Sure, here’s an example. I posted a link to a free VST from NI the other day. In order for it to work, I have to use the NI service center that came packed with the VST. OK, no prob, I’ll open it an enter my key. FAIL!. It’s says I don’t have an internet connection. OK, I uninstalled it, grab the service center installer from NI’s site. Run it, it connects to the internet, updates itself. It then runs again, FAIL! It tells me I have no internet connection. Now how is that possible if it just updated itself from the internet. I have tried everything I can think of to make it work, to no avail. What is weird is, it works fine on my work PC, but not my home PC. At least with a dongle I can reg it on another PC and be done.

I understand and accept that the dongle is not a good solution for some users.
Given that SB needs to protect their software by some means, there are some users that actually prefer the dongle as the method to do so. There are also some users that don’t really care and don’t MIND the dongle because it works and is not a hassle FOR THOSE USERS.

Would the users that are against the dongle please stop trying to convince those that prefer it or those that don’t mind it that they SHOULD be against the dongle in order to further their own campaign against it?

+1

The weakness in the dongle is the point between the connector and the printed circuit board. An aluminium or even a Titanium shell won’t change that.

Maybe Steinberg could come up with a dongle incorporating a short extension lead? Let the dongle dangle is what I say :stuck_out_tongue:

What weakness would that be? I have a dongle well over ten years old. Not one issue. The weakness is between those who keep losing car keys and those who don’t. Those who know how much it’s worth and those who think it’s just a “10c plastic biro”.
In one of my other lives one can tell the difference between a sloppy drummer and a pro by how many pieces of kit he loses or trashes or lets other people trash. Dongle’s just another piece of kit. You don’t lose it and you don’t abuse it. And NEVER give it to the guitarist.
Ah! Extension leads are, like 10c to $1. If you’re that poor what are you doing with all that gear?

The future is probably not so much a dongle, as an agreement between Steinberg and the NSA who are monitoring your DAW sessions…

“My preference is the best preference”

The National Spastic Association? And would that be Disclothed And Wan…g sessions?

If you use Windows or OSX then you don’t need Steinberg for this. Instead you’ll get an additional BND interface as a bonus.

Or Google, or Hotmail, or Facebook, and so on…

Or whatever “i” things

Monitoring!? They’ll make sure you comply with the fast food association of music!

Try anything else and MIB shows up.

Ive said it before but with large scale integration in place over the decades, you might think a 3/4 size reduction is doable
