Cubase 7.5 Freezing/Crashing

Postby musicbender » Wed Jan 08, 2014 9:56 pm

This is only happening since I got 7.5, but about five times now Cubase Freezes/Hangs when I select multiple MIDI tracks (ctrl click). It hangs and here's the odd thing: all sound will stutter forever. Sometimes the sound of my project will keep going (sloooowly and stuttering) or it will constantly play the windows error sound. It does this for about 5-10 minutes then Cubase crashes.

1.) Select more than one MIDI track
2.) Cubase freezes.
3.) Cubase crashes.

This does not happen consistently. Autosave might kick in right when I select two tracks? Also, I've been using Eastwest products (on the PLAY system) when this happens. Lastly, my projects are big and take up about 50 GB of RAM. My system is in my sig. below.

Thank you for your help!

After the 7th crash today I am noticing it happens even when single-selecting a track. I also think it has more to do with auto-save.

I have manually saved (ctrl-s) many times without the problem.

Sorry for my persistence, but anyone out there?

The crashing is increasing (can't run the program for more than 30 minutes) and Cubase is unusable now. As I observe the problem more, it is either one of two things:

1.) It crashes when I select ANY track or event

2.) It crashes on auto-save and selecting is a mere coincidence. I will try turning off auto-save next.
EDIT: Crash twice with auto-save turned off. I guess that rules that out! Only crashes when selecting or multi-selecting tracks.

In the middle of two paid projects so fixing this would be great. Thanks.

I upgraded to 7.5 and it's been crashing constantly. Aren't they suppose to get rid of the bugs before releasing an update. So frustrating.

Hi Pat,

You might want to try and disable Windows sounds, make sure Windows is updated, all drivers attached to system are up to date and maybe list your motherboard, if it isn't a manufactured pc. If it's a self build or custom built pc; are the chipset drivers installed/up to date?
Is your BIOS up to date?
What sound card are you using and are your drivers up to date?

May well be none of the above but they are worth a check, seeing as you're getting no other replies.

Failing all of those I'd be inclined to wipe the slate clean and uninstall/re-install.

dudius, thank you so much for your help! I really do appreciate someone taking the effort to try.

My motherboard is ASUS p9x79 PRO. Sound card is Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6 (drivers are up to date). I did everything you mentioned: updated BIOS, chipset, SATA (I guess they actually did need to be updated) and turned off windows sounds. Worth a shot, but still crashed twice on me when selecting two tracks :(

I hate to go through the hassle of reinstalling, but I guess it is the only thing I can do. I might also go back to Cubase 7 and hope that works.

Anyone else have any other ideas?

UPDATE: trying the same project on Cubase 7.04. Been working for over an hour with no crash (crosses fingers). In other words it looks like, so far, the problem is Cubase 7.5 for me. Sure wish I could use the upgrade I paid for. :|

Hi Pat, at least your system is up to date, no consolation as far as 7.5 goes, I know.

It may be worth just uninstalling 7.5 and doing a re-install of that, when and if you do be sure to check the box "Install for all Users" as this can cause heartache further down the road unchecked.
Another thing that may be worth trying, if you used the update installer for 7.5 (923MB), you could try the full installer this time (6.9GB).
I think you're right though to finish your projects in a stable environment and then attempt the 7.5 re-install.

Good luck.

Thanks dudius, I will try a full (re)install of 7.5 and see if that helps.

In case any Steinberg people are listening here is what I confirmed:

1.) auto-save is not the issue
2.) hangs/crashes only when I select more than one track (it might crash when I select even one, but I can't re-create that consistently)
3.) only happens in 7.5. 7.04 does not have this issue for me.
4.) It's annoying

My motherboard is ASUS p9x79 PRO

Hi had this with cubase 7.06. I updated my bios on the same motherboard (the normal one not the pro version).
Cubase would behave very bad and crashing all the time.

I reinstalled from scratch, this made it stable less or more because now I had dropouts.
Now when you update your bios all settings are returned to default, however I didn't hardcopy any bios settings.

After fiddling around with memory, clocking, power options and disabling HT, I managed to get it stable again, but this time with the newest bios and windows 8.1.

Still having little troubles like loading an old project, otherwise it seems stable again.

It seems that bios settings cab heavily scramble your system's stability,

Hope this can help...

Good to know Menoj. Thanks for the tips. I will try messing (carefully) certain BIOs settings and see if that helps. I know I've been wanting to add a bit more voltage to my memory to fix another issue I have anyways. Not sure I want to disable HT as that is nice to have.

In case this is happening to anyone else, I've tried messing with BIOs settings, memory voltage, and reinstalling 3 times. 7.5 simply is unusable for me and crashes 100% of the time I load any of my large templates/projects. It always happens when I select a track.

I guess I'll keep using 7.06 although I've paid for 7.5. I hope 7.5.10 will fix this -- very frustrating!

Hello there,

Pat, I'm getting the same issue you described! Really annoying!

I've build a new computer recently, as described in my signature, so it's a fresh installed Cubase 7.5
My experience is when working with small projects, no issues.

With a big project, it freezes (mouse pointer in busy mode loops a blinking state) and then crashes (not long as 5 min as yours, I think because of the RAM amount in use - my project is using about 20 Gb). I use EW (newst Play update) too.

I read in some other place and tried to find a dump reader software (got the AppCrashView) and if it helps (I'm totally noob about this thing) but in "fault module name" collumn in cubase dmp file it shows the MSVCR90.dll, it's a Cubase dll file.

I've updated from 7, but did a full installation from scratch to 7.5 and I use old projects/templates.
I don't know what the problem is exactly, and it has do to with some random crash when moving an event in the project area.

2/4/14 23:21 - Edit: I could reproduce crashing by dragging an audio file to an empty space in project area (working with the big project). After automatically creating an audio track and moving the event, it freezes and then crashes. I'll try with a new project and see if that happens again.

MSVCR90.DLL is a part of Microsoft Visual C Runtime Link Library, not necessarily a cubase related file.

East West has changed the preloading since version 4.
Does the same thing happen (the crashes) with version 3.0.47 of PLAY?

Also, since you are using massive libraries and loads, had you tried some different settings in the streaming section of play? Probably something is'nt loading fast enough.

good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion roel. But the crashing occurs only when I [Alt+Leff click] an event (MIDI or audio) or drag an audio file for an empty space in project area and only with my big template/project.
It didn't happen within Cubase 7.
Also i happens to an old template/project from 6.5, so maybe is a project/template related bug and I can't find out what it is exactly :/

CLmusic, that makes me feel better that someone else is having this issue! Recently, I've tried these things: updated to Cubase 7.5.20, updated all Play/Eastwest plugins to latest versions, clean/reinstall RAM sticks, RAM test. Nothing is solving the issue with Play an d 7.5. I did notice it only happens when I click on a MIDI track using Eastwest Play. It never happens on any other track (Omnisphere, Native Instruments, audio tracks, etc). Still at a total loss.

I did notice one of my 8GB RAM sticks is missing 4GB for no reason. I don't think it has anything to do with it, but it is worth mentioning perhaps. I've posted on Eastwest forums so hoping a solution will be found there. Anyone else have any ideas?

Had also problem with freezing Cubase.
My Project folder was on a separate HD.

Moved this folder to the Cubase HD.
Disabled Auto Save in: File - Preferences - General

Hi,

I am QA at Eastwest and do testing for bugs in the Play software.

I reproduced a crash during playback when selecting a track with Play on it. This happened pretty quickly in a large project after I activated the Play reverb in all Play instances. I tried this with no reverb for a while and got no crash.
For those of you who are experiencing these crashes with Play and Cubase 7.5: Are you also using the Play internal reverb in the projects that are crashing?

Thanks,
Helen

I am also having this issue. Mine seems to be happening much more frequently than others in this thread. When I select multiple Midi tracks, cubase crashes and it's happened 10+ times today.
