Tune Up Utilities

Oh, ok ta. I have three external (Seagate) HD’s and I think there are 2 x USB lead sizes between them (ie. the metal terminal which goes directly into the external HD).

Usually the plastic part inside the plug (where the metal connectors are attached to) is color-coded as follows:
White - USB 1
Black - USB 2
Blue - USB 3

  • 1 for Win 7 backup/restore sytem image.

When reinstalling, I do about five images to cover the process from ‘vanilla win 7’ to ‘absolutely everything installed’ - so if, for example, I’m updating Adobe Lightroom, I’ll go back to image number three which has solid Cubase and essentials like Drumkit Superior. It is pre Lightroom install, so I add the updated Lightroom and reinstall only what came later.

And yes you can do the backup using USB 3.0. If you would need to restore make sure it is plugged into a USB 2.0 port. WINDOWS 7, not sure about 8, does not recognize USB 3.0 during start up.

No worries, I am going to check with my local PC store when I drop it off for a service. Best to double check !

AHA! :bulb:

Got my PC’s back from the comp shop today. They seem to be running fine now that the dreadful ‘Tune Up Utilities’ has been 100% removed.

In particular, Grand 3 fires up with no issues and all the slots load with the correct file associations.

AVOID any kind of 3rd party Registry Cleaner or otherwise, at all costs !! :imp:

I’ve been using Ccleaner (Download CCleaner 5.84.9143 for Windows - Filehippo.com) for years and never had a problem. It doesn’t do any in-depth registry stuff but it does clean things up nicely after software installation and Windows updates etc.

Hi Themonioc,

If it works for you then great. I may have installed this a couple of years ago had I of known about it, but I am just not going to take the risk again now. I have only just managed to shake of most of the issues I have been experiencing since February.

Ta,

Paul

You’re traumatised monsterjazzlicks!

Ccleaner was written by computer professionals who know what to mess with and what to leave alone. If you get clogged up again you can use it with confidence but I understand your reluctance after your recent experience!

I wouldn’t go near Ccleaner. It may work ok for some, but there is no guarantee that it will work as advertised for all, and that it won’t mess you up in some way shape or form.

“Ccleaner was written by computer professionals who know what to mess with and what to leave alone.”

Doesn’t matter who it was written by. Many computer professionals who really know their shoot, would not even give this consideration.

My advice is to stay away from ALL of these apps - especially the freebies like this one.

Cheers.

As I said, I’ve been using Ccleaner for many years and have installed it on scores of PCs. It was called “Crap Cleaner” when it was written for techs. It was released to the public (under the more polite “Ccleaner” name) as it was considered a useful tool with which even the most reckless idiot could do no harm!

Don’t scare people away from what is a very effective tool for clearing out sometimes gigabytes of useless “crap”

As I said, you should stay away from these products; there ARE instances where they can do more harm than good. And the harm many times is irreversible.

Hi Jeff,

As a friend of mine recently told (warned) me, many PC’s come with these types of tools bundled within the product. Often as free ‘trials’ (McAfee, Norton, Tune Up, etc) and so he said the first thing he does is to REMOVE them all from day one !!

Paul

Jeff, you are obviously no expert. Lumping Ccleaner in with “all these” products, i.e. the paid-for tune-up apps, registry cleaners, tool bars, optimisers, browser gizmos etc. etc. is just not giving people good advice. I would bet that monsterjazzlick’s pal uses Ccleaner to remove all the unwanted crap that comes with most new PCs - as I have for the last 20+ years as a PC support specialist. In my experience Ccleaner has never been responsible for any damage to anyone’s system, but it has certainly improved the performance of many.

If you are going to advise your colleagues on this forum, you owe it to them to give GOOD advice!

And you obviously have no friggn clue as to what you are talking about. I am not here to get into a piszing match with you, but the internet is littered with people who have had bad experiences with CCleaner. Just do a search. Yes, there are many people who love it; but there are plenty who have had problems as well. Again, SEARCH.

By saying ‘stay away from CCleaner’, I have in fact given GOOD advice. You are entitled to your opinion, but telling people that a registry cleaner is a good idea, is BAD advice.

Oh dear, touched a nerve have I? Your statement “the internet is littered with people who have had bad experiences with CCleaner” is just an idiotic statement to cover your embarrassment. I repeat, you are obviously no expert.

I use a Vintage Conn Strobe tuner lol (its for sale)

In reality if you ever need help though I can log into your desktop and give it a go. A great utility for cleaning registry is RegCure PRO. (make sure you use pro) I would stay away from the AVG stuff (it gives to many false reading) and never make changes to reg without creating disk image. I use Acronis for this, I also have it set to do backup once a day of all changes. Also a great cloud one that I have used is CrashPlan Cloud Backup Solutions for Small Business - CrashPlan It works for both PC and Mac and has unlimited storage and great support

Hi Kenny,

Thanks a lot.

I had AVG bundled with my WinXP laptop when I bought it in 2007. After 6 x months I bit the bullet and just got the whole thing re-formatted. AVG is just the WORST company ever. I should have learned then about the problems Registry Cleaners can cause. From there I went to McAfee, then to Norton and they both gave me issues. Since uninstalling ‘Tune Up’ last month (and using Kaspersky instead of the aforementioned), touch wood everything seems to be ok now.

Now, if you really DID want to help me with something, then I need a bit of expert help with resetting the ASIO Buffer sizes to the correct (best) values because I have spent the last 10 x days solid trying to find A/V software to make video uploads and have consequently had to experiment greatly with the Buffer settings to cure extreme Latency issues. The Latency is a close as I can get it but I am suffering cracks&pops in my Audio now. I have spent 2 x days on this issue alone. We can Skype/Team Viewer (monsterjazzlicks) as I have 2 x PC’s. I would be happy to give you some beer money towards your time mate.

Sorry to go slightly off-topic here guys.

Ta,

Paul

AVG = Ain’t Very Good !!

(took me all weekend to think of that one !!).
