In September, Steinberg outlined its plans to ensure compatibility for its current product range and technologies to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and Windows 7, comprising a three-phase development and testing plan.

Phase One in which Steinberg tested products on both Windows 7 and Snow Leopard has been completed. The second and current development phase involves additional development work resulting from the tests during the initial phase.

The following provides information on the current status of product compatibility and availability of updates:

The Cubase line of products will fully support both Windows 7 and Snow Leopard with an update release in mid-December 2009 for Cubase 5, Cubase Studio 5, Cubase Essential 5 and Cubase AI 5. This update will be a maintenance update to 5.1.1.

The Cubase LE 4 and Cubase AI 4 versions have been tested and certified for Windows 7, with no further updates required. A Snow Leopard-compatible update will also be released in December.

The Steinberg developers are currently working on a Windows 7 compatible update for the WaveLab family of products.

Nuendo 4 version is compatible with both Windows 7 and Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

Sequel 2 is certified to be fully Windows 7 compatible, with no further updates required. An update for full compatibility with Snow Leopard will be released in mid-December.

Steinberg is pleased to announce an upcoming set of updates to the hardware products CC121, MR816 CSX/X and CI2, which will offer support for both Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6. These updates will be released simultaneously with the Cubase and Sequel updates in December.

VST instruments HALion 3.5, HALion Symphonic Orchestra 1.5, HALion Player 3, The Grand 3 and Groove Agent 3 have been certified as compatible with Windows 7, with no further updates required. HALion 3.5 is already fully compatible with Snow Leopard, but the remaining VST instruments require an update the release date of which still needs to be determined.

Virtual Guitarist 2, Virtual Bassist and Hypersonic 2 have also been certified as compatible with Windows 7.

Further details will be posted during the final phase.

Summer 2009 saw loads of music festivals come and go, many of which used Steinberg software and hardware in some way or other. One fond memory that comes to mind was this year’s Wacken Open Air, a three-day heavy metal festival in Germany which was solely produced by TVN GROUP Film & TV Production on Nuendo. Early on, TVN turned to Nuendo and has stayed with it ever since, using Nuendo at numerous German events such as Rock am Ring, Hurricane Festival and Coca-Cola Soundwave.

Steinberg interviewed Stephan Thyssen, TVN's sound engineer for mobile production, to find out more on mobile live recording and how he puts Nuendo to use.

The end of July 2009 saw the release of The Grand 3, the latest version of the renowned software piano from Steinberg. Several months down the line has provided sufficient time to use the grand and upright VST pianos in everyday situations. Steinberg asked musicians and producers who have been playing The Grand 3 on stage and in studios to talk about their experiences with the software. Read what professionals have to say about our virtual piano suite.

"To be able to afford the best grand pianos, having a sizeable studio space, getting them tuned, mic'ing up and avoiding feedbacks on stage can be time consuming.

"The Grand 3 makes you feel like you're in the best acoustic sounding room with a variety of the best pianos. It gives you pure definition from raw to crisp polished sounds, and it's compact enough to travel with me to the studio and whenever I'm on the road.

"The Grand 3 makes you want to play. It speaks to your soul. It's the future of software pianos."

— Kwame Yeboah, producer and keyboardist
(Craig David, Jamiroquai, Miss Dynamite)

"I really do love playing The Grand 3. It is quite an amazing sounding piano. It is quite an emotional instrument."

— Paul Mirkovich, keyboardist, composer and songwriter
(Cher, Janet Jackson, Whitesnake)

"Fantastically realistic and expressive, The Grand 3 has raised the bar in creating an instrument that truly inspires musical creativity."

— Erran Baron Cohen, music producer and film score composer
(Borat, Da Ali G Show and Brüno)

"The Grand 3 is one of the best sample based piano realizations I've come across. The features set is impressive, but more than anything else it is the quality and depth of the sound character itself that sets it apart."

— Paul Haslinger, film score composer
(Shoot ’Em Up, Crank, Underworld and Minority Report)

Read more about The Grand 3
