21st century audio production at the highest level
Among the customers that have rapidly recognized the potential of the world’s most efficient audio post-production system is Singapore-based Philbeat, a global operating production company providing audio-visual solutions to business events, conferences, theaters, film and multimedia installations in more than 30 countries. We had the chance to talk to Creative Director Philip Tan about his brand-new installation incorporating Nuendo and Nuage.
Pushing innovation and creativity
For more than 25 years Philip Tan’s career has attained organic growth requiring him to take on various roles such as creative audio director, surround-sound designer, performer and educator. Equipped with a broad knowledge of sound production, he worked with several digital audio workstations including Pro Tools, Logic, Sonar and Cubase/Nuendo. “In my experience, Steinberg and Yamaha have proven to be the leaders in audio and MIDI production by offering a one-stop workflow that pushes innovation and creativity in the foreground,” says Tan. Starting off with Cubase in the early 2000s, Tan has stuck with Cubase and Nuendo products since then.
Embracing Nuendo: When quality meets efficiency
In recent years, surround sound and lighting installations have become a growing business for Philbeat, making Nuendo rapidly become the tool of choice for Tan and his team. “Efficiency, creativity and quality are the essential parameters we’re dealing with day by day,” he comments. Inquiring on how Nuendo helps him achieve these staked-out preferences best, Tan states: “For instance, the new loudness track is a must-have for all my projects. This is especially vital for the creation of soundscapes.” Nuendo 6 provides a unique feature set for loudness measurement including an offline loudness track. “With the touch of a button, the loudness analysis shows the overall dynamic framework, which is essential when producing for large sound shows,” Tan continues.

As my work is continuously expanding, Nuage offers the only logical workflow that will provide me with endless possibilities and hands-on control over almost all Nuendo functions, and lets us end up with more time to spend on the creative process.
Yamaha Nuage with Nuendo 6: “The only logical workflow”
Philbeat have installed a brand-new Yamaha Nuage Controller system with Nuendo 6 at their facility in Singapore. “As my work is continuously expanding, Nuage offers the only logical workflow that will provide me with endless possibilities and hands-on control over almost all Nuendo functions, and lets us end up with more time to spend on the creative process. Obviously this has set a strong preference for Steinberg and Yamaha products,” Tan explains. Alongside the Nuage fader units that are used for mixing and working with plug-ins, the Master Section is highly valued by Tan for its practicality.
Tan continues: “The monitoring section of the Nuage Master Unit is one of the most-used features. We handle all kinds of complex projects from surround sounds for theaters to large visual and sound installations for architectural buildings, ending up in a large number of audio tracks. The instant access to different mix versions (up to 8) is a huge timesaver.” This is one reason why Philbeat are known across the industry for their creative and high-quality output while first and foremost ensuring on-time delivery. Another important aspect is reliability. “I found the whole production system highly reliable and trustworthy. Nuendo’s performance is always predictable, whether it’s running on my laptop or desktop. And together, Nuendo and Nuage are unbeatable, committed to offer the highest degree of stability and quality.”
The Yamaha Nuage system solution is a professional controller solution based on Nuendo, which can be extended to a full studio environment with further pro-audio components such as I/O interfaces and a synchronizer. The first systems were delivered to the market mid-2013 and have been received with enthusiasm.

Asia’s largest outdoor light and sound installation
Among his best-known projects is the “Gardens by the Bay: Supertree Light and Sound Show” in Singapore. Spearheaded and conceptualized between 2011 and 2013, this event is a complete surround-sound journey that magically transforms recorded audio into a live- performance every night. 48 independent loudspeakers were strategically placed in the venue to create a playful exchange of sound and lights. “The whole creative journey was wonderful, but if I had had Nuage at the time, I would have had more tools and room for greater creativity to build an even more exhilarating soundscape,” Tan says, looking back.
