As much as I have been amazed at what some of the typical “tips and tricks” actually can do, for me, it always comes back to what I call the “Ray Charles Law” which is, “yeah, but how does it sound, baby.” I think it’s from the Tom Dowd documentary where Dowd is talking about Charles’ reaction to listening to a mix and picking out some tiny discrepancy in the levels or something like that.
