Exporting stems through output plugins

Post by epwspower » Sat May 18, 2019 6:28 pm

I have various instances of multiband compression on my output to glue everything together...However, when a client needs stems (strings, percussion, synths, etc), these groups are exported individually and they affect the non-linear plugins on the output differently compared to the entire mix being exported. Sometimes individual stems don't even trigger the compression, but they would be affected by it when all tracks are exported together. Thus, when exported stems are played together, there are small eq/compression differences.

I had read about a technique to group everything besides the track you are exporting and sidechain the master to that group... Is this the best way to go about this? How exactly does one do that in Cubase? I'm admittedly an amateur when it comes to that type of SC routing, outside of typical drum-bass-kick-synth SC.

Anyone have experience with this in Cubase?
