X on notehead for percussion dead stroke

Hello all,

I’m loving the note spacing features that came in earlier this summer - my scores use a lot of spoken poetry with precise musical accompaniment, and now I can do the kind of fiddly horizontal alignment I need to do to align noteheads with non-lyric text. It’s great.

What I’m trying to figure out how to do is put an X on the stem of a percussion note to indicate a dead stroke. I’ve tried to see if anyone else in the forum has had this problem, but I couldn’t find any threads about it. Is there an alternate notation for dead stroke that Dorico has that I should be using instead?

Thanks,
-K

Right-clicking (or the Mac equivalent) on a note head gives you a pull-down, one option of which is note head selection.

That’s what I’m doing for now - my preference is something like this:

I suppose you have to enter the symbol as text and position it manually in engrave mode for now.

Copy and paste it from here: https://w3c.github.io/smufl/gitbook/tables/percussion-playing-technique-pictograms.html

Be sure to use the Music font style for the text object.
