9.5.30 update causing problems with Sonarworks, Input transformer.

Post by bender-offender »

I posted about the audio Pool not letting you trash audio files anymore, but now I just found out that it crashes if you're using Sonarworks 4 plugin. Initially, I had no Sonarworks plugin active after the 9.5.30 update, but now placing Sonarworks 4 for headphones on the Control Room insert, quitting Cubase and then trying to reopen will crash Cubase.

Also, I have a Global Input Transformer on all MIDI tracks filtering two CCs in the same Module (which worked fine in 9.5.21) and now randomly filters out notes F#6 and above. I had to create two separate Modules so that those notes aren't filtered anymore.

I know these are very specific issues that most people probably don't use, but come on Steinberg! I thought you're suppose to fix things with updates, not break things that once worked fine (i.e., Retrospective Record has not worked correctly since 7.5.20).

I had to go back to 9.5.21 because of these issues. Isn't it embarrassing when your customers need to downgrade to an older version just to make things work again? :!: :!: :!: :!:

Hi Martin,
Thank you for the reply.

Attached is a screenshot of the input transformer. I'm filtering CC 101 which controls my click volume and 102 which controls my dialogue volume. This way if I'm in the middle of recording MIDI those CCs aren't recorded to the tracks.

For some reason I can't attach any kind of text of PDF file to this message, so I had to do screenshots of a PDF.

I recommend not to install it. There's too many things that worked fine in 9.5.21 which are not broken in 9.5.30

The update works and installs. I had on the project currently working on no probs.
It seems the Elicense is not the lastest version but runs. I downloaded the latest EL and works ok.
So no probs here.

I think it is MAC related. Windows 10 Cubase runs well. Here.

I can't speak to Mac, Hopefully Martin will be able to get back to this thread. But I have installed the update on my desktop (see sig) and on my new HP Spectre x360 i7-8550u and no probs so far.

Could be, yes. Have you tried to delete an audio file in the Audio Pool to send the Trash in 9.5.30? For me, it tells me the file is used in another pool (which it's not) and it can only be removed from the Pool. That was the first bug I noticed in this update.
I am sorry, some things i do not. This does not mean its a bad update. To me i never delete in the pool. Because i use Halion and groove agent and allmost no audio files exept for vocals etc. So i say to me its fine... To you it may be a bug. To say its terrible ? Well.. eh
Well, like I prefaced in my first post, I know that these issues I'm having probably aren't used by everyone and are very specific. However, trying to delete audio files from the Pool seems like something that many users would use.

And I still think it's a really bad update. If you look on the VI-Control forum, there's been reports of 9.5.30 causing corrupt projects that people didn't experience in 9.5.21 and earlier.

Hi,

It would be great, if you could provide a list. This is too vague and the user can't decide, if the problem is important for him or not. If he will meet it, or if he is working in totally different Cubase area.

Moreover, the list helps Steinberg to fix it, if it will be found as a general issue, and if necessary.

Hi Martin,
Thank you for the reply.

Hi,

I would recommend to make the input transformer more robust (and logical):
(Type Is | Equal | Controller | And
Value 1 | Equal | CC 101 ) Or
(Type Is | Equal | Controller | And
Value 1 | Equal | CC 102 )

Hi Martin, I appreciate you taking the time to look into all of this.

When I was still using 9.5.30 I did change the input transformer to what you described. However, I don't understand why I would need to change something that worked fine to accommodate a broken update?

The same goes for the Sonarworks 4 plugin. It was working perfectly fine in 9.5.21 and earlier, then the 9.5.30 update caused Cubase to crash on loading. So I do not think it is something Sonarworks needs to fix. I'm sorry, but this is a Steinberg issue.

Concerning the list of things broken in 9.5.30, I did list them in my initial post: Audio Pool, Input Transformer, Sonarworks.

Hi,

It happens (in general in the software) that fixing of issue A brings issue B. ;-) Or fixing of issue breaks some users workarounds or a users' wrong settings doesn't work anymore (what could by the case of your Input Transformer here).

It's a complex system.

Ok, I’ll agree to that. My input transformer was not a perfect setting and possibly 9.5.30 adjusted something in the transformer to make it work a little more in detail. If that was the only issue with 9.5.30 then I would have never posted this topic in the first place (like I said, I fixed the input transformer in 9.5.30 after I realized it wasn’t working like before).

However, I made this post because in a matter of an hour after installing 9.5.30 I found multiple problems; the two main issues being not being able to trash audio in the Pool and Sonarworks crashing Control Room.

My concern is Steinberg will ignore these issues and move on without a fix because most users don’t use these specific features/plugins — the same way they broke Retrospective record in 7.5.30 and have never fixed it. Or the way MIDI tracks get record-enable stuck on one track when you move to other (which goes back to Cubase 6 if I remember correctly).

The Pool issue will be fixed in the next update.

Sonarworx should be fixed in their said. Actually it might be the exactly same case as it is with the Unit Transformer. Something had been fixed/improved. But it could break some Sonarworx workaround or something.

What did you intend to say here? I am asking since I use Sonarworx and will not update if this messes it up.

I wanted to say, that the issue is most probably on side of Sonarworks plug-in, and they should fix it.

If you're using a Sonarworks plugin in Cubase 9.5.30 it will crash when you try to load Cubase and you won't be able to access your project. If this does happen, the only two ways to get things working again is to either delete the "sonarworks.vst" file so Cubase doesn't load it, or to roll-back to Cubase 9.5.21.

@Martin - thanks again for the help. I will contact Sonarworks and see what they have to say about this issue.

Whilst there seems to possibly be a problem with Sonarworks/Cubase 9.5.30 and Apple machines, i can confirm Sonarworks is working perfectly fine on my Windows 10 machine.

Thanks for the headup about the sonarworks. You guys have the latest SW? Either way i'm gonna stay clear for now.

+1 update the title so it will stand out "Sonaworks plugin major issue 9.5.30"

Again, the title of this thread is incorrect. The issues I found in the 9.5.30 update are Sonarworks crashing AND the Audio Pool not trashing unused files. This has been only for Macs btw.

You have another thread for the Audio Pool.

Just to clarify on SonarWorks under Cubase 9.5.30 on Mac issue... (Windows users this is not for you).

The plugin seems to work fine on Monitor inserts but not on Headphones. It is not profile related. I, like others I presume, have a ticket open with SonarWorks which they are investigating, but the latest update I had from them is that they are unable to reproduce the problem, although they know multiple users are having the issue. Strange. (I have done quite a bit of testing on it myself to come to the above conclusions, checking various permutations of SonarWorks configuration, etc.)

The best (least-impacting) workaround is to remove the Sonarworks insert from the Headphone channel(s) in the Control Room (CR). All projects should then be ok in Cubase 9.5.30. The Monitor insert(s) can remain. I also tested having the plugin in 'headphone' mode in a regular Audio channel and it seems to open OK, so the problem is very specific to CR Headphone channels in my opinion.

For those that are really stuck, to fix a Cubase that won't open, do this:

1. Move (but don't completely delete!) the Sonarworks plugins from /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST. (I do a normal delete to Trash, then 'Put Back' from Trash later).
2. Start Cubase - it should start fine.
3. Move SonarWorks plugins back to /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST
4. Open Studio -> VST Plug-In Manager, click on the little cog (settings) in the bottom left-hand corner to see the plugin paths, then click on the 'Rescan All' symbol (2 small arrows chasing each other in a circle) on the far right of bottom title bar where it says 'VST2 Plug-in Path Settings'. Wait until it re-finds the SonarWorks plugin(s).
5. Open Control Room and remove the insert from the any Headphones channels (even though it shows with exclamation marks signifying the plugin was missing when it started up) and re-insert the inserts on the Monitor channels (they will show with exclamation marks too), ensuring they are configured with the correct profiles of course.

That should be enough to get you up and running even though the headphone channel inserts will be missing.

I'll post here again as soon as I hear anything more from SonarWorks.
