Sudden FW performance issue with onscreen video - any tips?

Post by Schottlandru » Thu Dec 29, 2011 2:02 am

Hello folks,

all of a sudden I have performance issues with my FF800 when using onscreen video. So I checked older projects (few weeks old) -> same behaviour. The weird thing: it's not a CPU issu, playback via Asio4all onboard sound is perfect.
The only thing I can think of: I had installed QT 7.7 but gone back to 7.1.5, 7.4.5... no change.
I've started hunting IRQ settings etc. and see the FW chip and the PCIexpress bus seem to share IRQ19 (along with USB), but as I am using a (the same) laptop, things seem fixed and not changeable.
Very weird - I cannot think of anything crucial I have changed, installed, uninstalled...

Win7 64bit, Nuendo 5.5 32bit

Any ideas? I would appreciate all things worth trying, this has me completely stumped as it actually just had been working fine (back then also with an MBox 2 Pro which I had thought would be rather flakey asio-wise).

Thanks for taking time to help!
PS: How do I update my signature in the new forum... :-\

Can you explain "Sudden FW performance issue" in more detail?
Do you have drop outs more often with your fireface?

Does it go away if you close the onscreen video window?

PS: You can change your signature in MySteinberg ("Forum").

Hello Bodo,

thanks for chiming in - exactly what you said. Audio dropouts via FW interface when the onscreen window is playing. When I hide the window playback is smooth. It is also smooth using the onboard chip (asio4all) WITH the window onscreen. There are no ASIO spikes on the VST performance meter though.

I've tried playing with the "powerplay" option of the ATI card as well as QT settings (use safe GDI mode only, disabling direct-3d use etc.), but I am not 100% sure they apply to Nuendo or whether they would need a reboot or so.
Checked my "No1 boost", background services setting in system performance, and it is still set (this one had tricked me a few years back).

Did you lower the latency of your fireface compared to the past?

What video material do you play back (codec)? Is it the codec you usually use?
Perhaps the option "Boost Video" in the video device panel is a Workaround (But could make it worse too 8-) )

Is you project big? Does it charge your system to its capacity?

Did you update to 5.5 recently?

If none of my questions is answered with "yes", than there must be something wrong with your firewire latency... The IRQ sharing could be an indication.

That's what bugs me, no.

Buffer like it was (1024).
I suspected codec, but my past sessions behave the same (as does the new one with MJPEG, as always).
Had 5.5 for a few productions now (-> used to work fine).
The current session doesn't go into red on the VST CPU meter, and the onboard sound works flawlessly. The older mix sessions were medium heavy and dropout now. Used to work on them for hours (90 min doco mix, the current is just a few seconds long.)

Bodo thanks for the suggestions so far. Still has me puzzled this.

Maybe this link can help you:
http://www.stantondj.com/activekb/quest ... estionid=1

If not:
Do you have another firewire audio interface by any chance?
If you had any you could try to narrow the cause down to the specific hardware or firewire in general.

Did you do any bios updates/ changes?

Thank you, I tried the ACPI advice, no luck. I noticed I have two instances on my list though - maybe an issue? (I think my notebook somehow accepts two batteries in theory though).

I'm no the legacy fw driver for Win7 already, others didn't work, and I also tried a pmcmia adapter with a ricoh or nec though, far worse performance.
Really stumped. I guess 2012 will need to see a new system coming, but I prefer a mobile setup and the list on notebooks with FW and esp. a TI chip plus the features I would like it to have... pretty short for now.

I might give N4 a go when I get back, but so far N5.5 has been fine for me with no real reason to go back yet.

Just saw - under system performance I re-tested and the windows performance for the aero-graphics dropped from 4,1 to 2,2 - something HAS screwed up the gfx performance!

OK the system Windows-performance rating issue was due to powersaving option.

BUT I have just tested: Only video and one audio file in N5.5 stutters badly. Same setup, same video and audio track in N4 runs smooth as butter.

So somehow the N5.5 video engine has been screwed or doesn't behave like it used to. Any ideas what could be causing this? Desperate for a solution before the next Nuendo job comes up!

Cheers,
Andrew

Andrew: I have the same setup as you (as you know) and now same/similar problem. I used to have a big problem with video playback on 5.5 and 5.1. But thanks to you it was solved.
Now video and audio playback works smooth with N5.1.
But with N5.5 I have clean audio PB until I open video screen (F8). Audio starts to jump and soon audio PB stops. No audio output and no metering on audiotracks.
After reseting VST audio system audio is back, stuttering again and then audio/metering disappears. It seems that audio PB tries to sync to video but fails resulting no audio PB what so ever...
Without audio, video runs smooth on N5.5?! Add only one audio track and insert audio to that track --> first stuttering , then no audio. Video PB still smooth...

I can use N5.1 for movie work but this is not good...

So I agree with Andrew, something is screwed in Nuendo 5.5 video playback. It might be system related as it happens on two similar systems, but it is only with N5.5. 5.1 works fine. What was changed from 5.1.--> to 5.5. concerning video engine? And can it be fixed???

Hello Tumppi and wavcatcher,

@Tumppi:
Do you have another firewire audio interface by any chance?
If you had any you could try to narrow the cause down to the specific hardware or firewire in general.

@wavcatcher:
Can you please explain your problems?
Do you have the problems with the system mentioned in your signature?

Best Regards

I can try it with M-Audio FW410, when I can find the time.

Trumppi, Andrew,

here is another try: Can you please check if the symptom is dependent to 32-bit plug-ins running in 64-bit Nuendo?
If you have 32-bit plug-ins running, please unload them and see if the problem remains. It is possible that we are seeing a conflict between the VST-Bridge and the video engine.

Thanks,

Just saw now that you are looking into this - GREAT!

As for 64 - I'm on 32bit also.
Any idea if 5.5.5 will solve this?

Thanks for trying to help, Bodo!

@Tumppi, what Fireface driver and firmware version are you on? I'm still pretty "old" as I have a model with headphone clicking on new firmware that would need a modification to fix.

I am also on the legacy FW driver in Win7. What is your current "FF800-path"?

:-(

This issues has just spoilt my last recording session. Luckily only voice-overs with short snippets. Still dropouts in the recordings :(

Any news on this? Why is the video window interfering with the firewire playback? N4 is fine. PT is fine. Weird...
